I'm so upset, I've just found out the result of my group b streptococcus swabs and I am positive. Means I have to go one I.v. Antibiotics as soon as labour starts. I am so upset as I didn't want to be in hospital for all my labour and really wanted a water birth but think those things r out of the window now. Glad I know in a way as don't want to risk baby getting it but generally am completely GUTTED!! :-(

Sorry to hear but atleast u can protect ur LO now x my kit came yesterday

So sorry to read this.
I was also positive with this when i had my son.
So I know how you feel.
They wouldnt let me have a water birth as \i so wanted one too, but apparently some midwifes will let you.
My waters broke early because of this and I had my son at 37 wks, not saying this will happen to you but beware it can happen!
Please pm me if you want to ask questions about it. xxxx

Oh blimey! Best get my last minute things done this weekend...37weeks on Monday! Thanks Corrinne for sharing and your info, will call MW to discuss options on Monday xx

Oh no, poor you but best that you know. Where did you get your kit from and how long did results take etc, wondering if now too late for me to check Xx

Started a thread on this earlier this week. Test comes quickly, easy to do and results text to me within 3 days of sending results off, I'd say never too late to check xxx

You don't have antibiotics as soon as labour starts - they put you on them as soon as you're in established labour which is quite near the end. I am +ve for it too but I was in labour at home for over 24 hours and also in hospital for hours before they put my on the drip (just after my waters broke before Sam was born) x

ok ive not been tested for this and wasnt when i had my older 2 kids 15 years ago x what is it and does everyone get tested and if not how will i know if baby gets it xx

Thanks sam's mum for your info, I will just have to try not and get fixated on this result today and wait til I speak to my midwife on Monday. Good to hear I may be able to stay at home and not have the iv til later on....sounds like there is hope yet for birth without the immediate medical intervention or hospital time....makes me hopeful xx

See other thread I posted last week. Not a routine NHS test but in the US they do test all pregnant ladies. I didn't know about it til I saw a post of here and thought I'd like to check. A personal choice on whether to test or not

They don't routinely test for it here because even if you're +ve it's not present all the time to be picked up on a swab so false negatives are reasonably common. I only know I am because I had hundreds of tests for things after major surgery years ago. If you do have it they monitor your baby for 24 hours after birth x

I'm sorry to hear this chick. Try not to get to down about it, you may not have to be in hospital for the whole duration of your labour and as Corrinne says some mw's let you have a water birth. Try to stay positive until you've spoken to your mw, hopefully it's not all bad :hugs:xxx

Unfortunately it's just one of those things. I tested positive (it's a routine test in Italy where i live) then took a course of antibiotics but was still positive so had iv antibiotics every 4 hrs during labour.

Oh that's interesting I will see if I can get treated before labour and re-tested to see if clear for when labour kicks in. Yeah it is just one of those things.... pants though as so far so good for me in regards to problems in pregnancy and was so close to not needing a more medical delivery xx

Exactly the same for me, I had a very good pregnancy and was then tested positive a few weeks before I gave birth. Ryan came 2 weeks early, I don't know if this is connected?
But a course of antibiotics may clear it up and then you can have the birth you want!
