So we got home from the hospital about 4 hours ago and thought I’d write my birth story before going for a sleep!

Friday
Started getting mild period like pains in the afternoon which I suspected were early signs, along with bits of clear plug. I didn’t really think it would happen quickly as it wasn’t much.

7pm
Pains were a little worse and more frequent – probably about once every 15-25 mins. So went to Morrisons with mum at around 8ish and got home at around 9pm.

9pm
By this point, the pains were getting much closer together and lasting a good 20 seconds. I called the hospital at 9.30, but it was a busy night at the maternity unit, and I had to wait until 10.15 until a midwife called me back. I told them that I was in labour and that the pains were coming irregularly at between 4 and 6 minutes. She told me that they liked the pains to be about 3 mins apart before asked to com in – to stay at home and try and have rest.

11pm
At 11.15 we called them back as I was now really feeling the contractions and was feeling the distinct need to push. Unfortunately at that point, due to laying down, they had slowed down slightly to between 6 and 10 mins. So the midwife told me to have a bath (that old chestnut!), and if they got worse after getting out, then to call back. So after getting in around 11.35 I got in, and wasn’t in the for more than 5 minutes before feeling a pop and a gush of warmth. Yup, the waters had gone.

Midnight
After drying and dressing I remember looking at the time on my phone when I called the hospital again, and it was 12.01, when I informed them my waters had gone, and my pads were very wet and pink tinged. She of course told me to go in. Arrived at around 12.40 and the pains were pretty bad – the need to push really urgent – my body trying to do them automatically. I got taken into the assessment room.

After this the times are a little sketchy!

Eventually, after chasing the midwife a few times (they were having a really busy night), she came in and examined me – and low and behold I was fully dilated (I knew I was). She gave me some gas and air, telling me to relax and try to breathe through each contraction which is really so much easier said than done. And then another midwife came in to join the first and told me I could push right there in the assessment room!

Unfortunately, the contractions seemed to slow down, and didn’t last very long – only long enough for about 2-3 pushes. So after a while they wheeled me to a delivery room, where there was a better bed. The short contractions and pushing went on until about 3.50 when I was seen by as doctor who examined me and said that if I didn’t deliver in 20 mins, she was going to use a ventrouse as I’d been fully dilated for so long.

25 mins later they had to use it and at 4.49 in the morning, my beautiful baby boy – Greyson Ridley Nicholls – was delivered and placed on my chest.

I’d said all along that I wanted a nice 7lb’er – and at 6lb 15½ oz, I couldn’t have got much closer!!!

And here he is…

Greyson is such a good baby - he only generally makes a peep when he's hungry or getting changed! Otherwise he's a little angel!
