Sorry it is so long but I just want to get it all off my chest (taken me a while to get round to this)
Around 28th August I was admitted in to hospital due to high BP and high levels of protein in my urine. I was about 31 weeks pregnant at the time and a little apprehensive as they were planning on keeping me in until delivery (30th October was my due date). The next day I was officially diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and informed that they would try to get me to 37 weeks before inducing me.
I spent a long 6 weeks in the hospital being administered stupid amounts of BP medication, injections every day and CTG tests twice a day. I spent most of my time staring at the four walls and completing tons of exciting word searches.
I was regularly scanned and it was noticed on 14th September that baby was very small for his gestational age, sitting below the 5th percentile as well as in breech position (goodbye to my planned VBAC). Naturally this was worrying as he had been measuring perfectly up until this point. We were scanned each week and he was consistently staying below the 5th and the placenta was also starting to malfunction.
At 36 weeks + 3 days whilst on the CTG babys heart rate kept dropping very low everytime I had a Braxton hick contraction, and the doctors decided that they would need to deliver him that morning. I was prepped for an emergency c-section and everything started to happen very quickly. Just before wheeling me down to surgery the consultant changed their mind and decided that it was not necessary for me to deliver yet and it was cancelled. As you can imagine I had entered full panic stations and was incredibly angry and upset at being messed around so badly. I spent most of the rest of the day sulking in my bed.
That evening, my chest had become very uncomfortable and due to having issues with BP I let the midwife know it was feeling a bit odd. They tested my BP which had increased somewhat and so put me on a CTG again. Low and behold the same was happening again and babys heart rate was dropping with each contraction. The doctor reckons that baby was playing with his cord and this could well be causing the abnormal CTG and my chest pains. The decision was made to take me straight to surgery and deliver before anything else went wrong. I was put under a general anaesthetic and my husband didnt even have time to get in to hospital before our son was delivered.
Edward William Owen Rosbrook was born at 10.19pm on 5th October. He was just perfect! Measuring at a teeny 4lb 2oz he was very well considering the stress he had been under. He was admitted to the Special Care Unit overnight for monitoring as he was struggling a little with his breathing but was brought back to us by the morning. He had mild jaundice so had to go on a UV bed for 24hrs but it cleared up very quickly. We were discharged fairly quickly considering, 3 days later.
I cant even begin to tell you what a relief it was that after 6 weeks of hospital stay I could finally go home and enjoy our new beautiful boy! I cried as I left the building! I have to stay on all the medication for a further 6 weeks including injecting myself twice a day but when I look at my little man I know it was and is all worth it!
