thomas has been put on gaviscon as his new milk makes him sick but there is no others he can take so we have to stick with this one,
he also has to have thicking powder in his bottles,
ive just read the gaviscon packet and it says dont give if a thickening agent is also used, i cant really cut this out unless i really have to so i need to no if gaviscon makes the milk quite thick or not thicker at all
thanks
xx

I was told it would make the milk thicker but I don't find it does at all (SMA gold). She had no problems getting it out the bottle and still drains a bottle in the same amount of time she did before it had gaviscon in it. It reacts with the contents of the stomach to thicken everything once it goes down so it can't come back up again.

but yet we did find it made it thicker and he needed the next size teat up to be able to drink it , maybe it depends on what formula you use ?

maybe you could give gavsicon in water and his thickening powder in is milk , but tbh i wouldnt mess about with meds and id be back at doctors asking whats ok

he could easily be put on something other then gaviscon to help with sickness

thanks thats the problem he can only have 1 teat and it only comes in 1 flow crap its too slow for him as it is which i really dont think is helping, i dont think he can have anything else because of his allergys and the stuff he is already having in his bottles :(
il just have to try wont i :(

GP's are stupid. If you are using a thickener already then this makes gaviscon redundant.

Gav will make the contence of the stomach turn to jelly-ish. Thus making it harder to throw up. It will only make the feed marginally thicker... this is because it does its thickening/jellying when its in the baby.

I use Neocate at the moment, and was told by my Pead when we were in hospital not to add anything to it. I dont know what milk you are on, but I have to put up with the vomiting lol, are you on Domperidone?! That can help greatly sometimes.

we are on nutrimegin 1 hypoallergenic formula, we are just consurned aout him bieng sick as we cant afford for him to loose weight or be scared of a bottle due to his cleft, just made a bottle up with 1 dose of gaviscon it seems ok so far will try him on it in a moment,
ive got an apt with a dietian next week hopefully he will help, the docors at the hospital never said anything about the milk just that we have to add the thick and easy to it so its drinkable for him

Did whoever prescribed him the Gaviscon realise he was on the thickener Manda?

I would think (and hope!) it wouldn't be a problem then. Fingers crossed it works, was a miracle for us

Ahh yes, we've been on that formula, but DS hated the taste, apparantly thats common, and he would not touch it. Becareful that dont turn into a problem for you either, I know what you mean about needing them to not associate food with pain etc. To combat this our Pead had me ween him lastmonth, so he has one meal a day thats fruit mixed with baby rice, he loves it, and it gets another two OZ in him. but thats only for extreem cases I guess they dont want anyone weening early if it can be helped, and I know nothing about clef palats either.

Try it... with just the gav, you may be supprised. It may also give DS constipation - tho it can have the opposite effect too. It made my DS constipated, then (as you know) tryign to get water in them is imposibble, as its even thinner than milk... eakkk - these babys, sent to test us!!!

 hope it works for you, and questions feel free to PM, iv tried everything over the months...

We've noticed no difference on the Gaviscon - but we're using one sachet instead of two because two paradoxically seem to make her even worse than none (whereas one sachet seems to be the miracle cure we were hoping for)...

Good luck xxxx

thanks hun thomas has been being weaned for the past month :) it is helping but now he preferes the food to a bottle :wall: i have to agree the milk is vile they said there is no others he can have apart from 1 and thats even worse like paintstripper :( going to give it another week then go back to the hospital see if they can do anything else also going to beg cleft team to do his op more closer to 6 months then to 9 like they want to as that would help atleast he can have normal bottles and teats then
thanks again hun

My friend has the same problem with her little boy preferring food to bottle - she gives him his bottle FIRST and then the food because otherwise Jacob just woffs the food and then won't touch the bottle. Might be worth a try?

And I'm with you on the milk. We're on SMA LF and they wanted us to try Nutramagen but it was VILE SMELLING and VILE POO! Ewwwwwwwww. Stuff that for a game of soldiers. Even if Connie is cow intolerant (which would be ironic as she loves cows) I'm not subjecting her to THAT.

he does have a bottle first apart from in the eveing because he cant sleep on a belly of food so he has fod then a bottle,
thomas cant have cows milk, soya or anything with lactose in it he can have soya oil but not soya bean basicaly if he really doesnt get on with it there is only rice milk left lol
i tried him with the gaviscon and he drunk a whole ounce lol and refused anymore :wall:
not going to offer him any food just let me scream then keep offering the bottle its the only thing i can do really
thanks all
xx
