gas/hot water help!

DH has emailed the letting agency this:

Hi,
Just a small query about our hot water/boiler at the above address. We've noticed that there always seems to be hot (or at least warm) water available even when we haven't switched the hot water on for a while and the boilers pilot light is always on.

I don't know if this is normal or not, but obviously we're worried about running up a big gas bill if it isnt! I would suspect that there might be a problem with it and that is why it is sometimes only warm and not hot.

And theyve replied:

Our gas boiler is always lit!!! We assumed it was normal! And I love having hot water whenever we want!!

Um, dunno. I do know that at my sister's the water remains hot for quite some time after the boiler has been switched off.

There are websites around where you can ask technical questions like that - if you don't get any joy here then that might be a sensible plan.

we had this. Last summer OH was confused as to why there was always hot water even tho the boilder had been off for some time. He got his dad to have a look (we are both useless ). it turns out we have an emmersion (sp) heater as well as a boiler...

i dont even know what we have, theres the big white box on the wall and a tank upstairs. We have a switch on the white box but also some weird brown box on the wall that clicks but doesnt seem to be hooked up to anything yet we cant turn the damn thing off. i dont know what all these things doo so i dont know what should/shouldnt be on, but i was under the impression that if you wanted hot water the light should be on but when you dont it goes off. surely if its burning its costing us?
