Hi

Has anyone applied for this yet?

Keep seeing the adverts & received a flyer in the mail this morning but not sure if they'll be a catch? I know you've got to sign up for their broadband for a minimum of 24 months & £14.99 delivery charge but surely there is more to it?

Anyone got their laptop or applied for Broadband with aol yet?

I was at my mams yesterday and this advert came on.

I said Free Laptop  yeah right.

My mams OH laughed and said 'no such thing as a free meal' :rotfl:

I know its an old saying but its sooooooo true.

In my own words 'you dont get nowt for nowt anymore'...

I'd say there must be a catch, you'll prob be tied into a contract for X amount of years whereby which you end up having paid for the laptop twice over.

xxxx

There are loads of companies doing this now.
Orange were doing it, as were Carphone Warehouse, AOL are doing it for the 2nd time at the moment, PC World were doing it last summer - laptops to you and I might be a few hundred pounds but the companies that make them do so for pennies...hence they can afford to give them away and make their money on the £14.99 per month for the broadband contract, all this started with the introduction of free broadband offers etc that are starting to come out now and things like no longer needing a phone line to get online etc, I guess it's a way for them to make £350 odd pounds (£14.99 x 24 months) from heaps of people as they know people are going to start using the internet without having to subscribe to providers etc soon.

its coz aol broadband is crap.. although it b ok if u hardly use it a guess..

yes it is true my father inlaw got it and he only paid 14.99 wireless is better. been with aol for 11 years no problems.

AOL is the evil of internet suppliers

I'd not touch their broadband service with a bargepole. Not even for a free laptop.

 what she said... :) aol is rubbish, that's the catch lol

what do you think im typing on

We have AOL, and have no problems with it..

Mum (lives next door) has AOL and has had no problems with it, they've been with them for years. They did just change to carphone warehouse to get the free lappy, which DH set up for them a few days ago. I think their broadband is still through AOL though

The inlaws signed up with AOL when you got the free PS3. AOL delivered 2 (before Xmas) and have never chased up the extra one. They messed up the inlaws bill and debited over £300 out of their account without warning, which was then recredited TWICE! So the inlaws ended up with 2 PS3s and £300 up in cash :rotfl: Bless AOL

Not only do AOL force you to use their custom internet browser which is rubbish, but they block ports, throttle internet traffic and have a fair usage policy regarding downloads that is anything but fair.

It does depend on your usage - if you don't use online gaming, download movies, music or used IRC based chat clients then it will probably be fine. However there are many other providers out there that have unlimited monthly deals for a lot less money than AOL.

As for the laptop, it is fairly low specs that just are not worth the £450 price tag that the website says. It only has 1GB ram which as it comes installed with Windows Vista means that anything you try to do on it with take forever to load unless you know how to trim down the services that the laptop has running in the background. It also has a Celeron processor which is one of the most basic chipsets that Intel make and they don't perform particularly well.

24 months is a long time to be on a fixed price contract and I think they are limiting you to 8Mbps. Speeds are increasing all the time, I would think that 8Mbps in two years time will be considered a fairly low speed.
