Hi,

Could someone please explain the rules on free nursery care for children?
I understand some children are entitled to however many hours per week of free childcare from the goverment?

Is it only for 3 year olds or something?

I'm taking a year off but I can't help but think I won't be able to go back to work unless I get at least some free childcare. LO will be a year old by then. If I did go back, it'll only be part time.

I don't have family that will be able to look after him.

All children are entitled to 15 hours a week from the term after they turn 3, there is also a system in place where they take them from 2.5 if it's of significant benefit to the parents/child (in cases where a parent is ill, left an abusive relationship/the child has development issues). You do have to hit income criterium for that too! If you send LO to an ofsted registered childcare provider, you can get a childcare element in your tax credits and some employers offer childcare vouchers too xx
