I somehow got pregnant while I was using and IUD and because I had the IUD, I didn’t think it was possible for me to be pregnant (no sickness and I mistook the minimal weight gain for being caused by hormonal changes from the IUD). I found out I was pregnant when I went to my doctor for a cold and she decided to have me do my yearly physical one time. I have been drinking alcohol on and off this whole time and now I’m very concerned that my baby will not be okay. I have known for almost two weeks and have not had a drink since. I ABSOLUTELY want to keep the baby but I feel selfish bringing a child into this world who might have some kind of deformity or serious mental health issue. Do you think I should be worried? And my GYNO said the baby looks normal on my sonogram today at 19 weeks.

Was the sonogram a routine one or did they do the detailed 20 week scan? If the baby is looking normal that's a really great sign especially if it was a full 20 week anomaly scan as they look in really close detail at everything they can.

While it's obviously not ideal to drink in pregnancy, a lot of our grandmothers would have done (as well as smoking) when they were pregnant with our parents generation. You can't beat yourself up about it when you didn't know. All you can do is make the best choices you can moving forward and it sounds like you're doing that. You're going to be fantastic! xxx

First off, thank you so much. I appreciate you saying that because I really feel like I have no idea what I’m doing but I know I want to do whatever is right for my baby. And I don’t think it was a 20 week anomaly scan because I’m only19 weeks in and they told me to come back in 2 weeks for another sonogram. I’m definitely going to ask that they do an anomaly scan as soon as possible.

I totally know what you mean. I also feel like I have no idea what I'm doing as I'm pregnant with my first too and it's overwhelming at times. But talking to the ladies here, it really shows that even when it gets tough we all find a way through. Good luck with the anomaly scan.

Agree with Abi. It sounds like your baby doesn’t have any major physical problems (would be very obvious by now), so that’s a good sign. To answer your question - alcohol can cause Foetal Alcohol Symdrome where babies can have learning difficulties. It’s not common though unless the mother is a heavy drinker. I don’t think they can pick it up on an ultrasound. I think since you’ve stopped drinking at not even half way through your pregnancy, it’s not likely that your baby will have it.

Obviously drinking while pregnant isn’t good but it doesn’t guarantee something will be wrong with the baby. Even nowadays many women still drink throughout pregnancy and go on to have healthy babies. You can’t change what’s happened now so don’t beat yourself up over it. Just do the best you can do from now on. You clearly want to do what’s best for your baby so you’ll be a good mum! x

Side note: No-one knows what they’re doing when they have a baby. We’re all winging it.
