i've been looking at a few for ryan, they seem to say from 9 months or 20lb, Ryan is a big lad, hes over 21lb. Do you think its safe to put him in one now?

haven't put Jack in his yet but I did ask about it and I was told if he is under 9 months but can sit unaided properly it is fine to use them :)

If he is big and able to sit unaided then it should be ok :)

*edited to add* I missed how old he is, sorry. I'd be wary at his age putting him in forward facing. Sorry.

i would personally say no but if his neck musel(sp) are strong and he can sit unaided for 30+ mins then do what you feel right, if he needs a bigger seat then you can get group 0+ seats which can be rear facing then forward facing.

Willow was about 8 months when we put her forward.

Do what you feel is right as you know your baby but this is my advise.

Hmm this is a hard one really! Generally they say its better to go off the weight rather than the age but then, your LO does seem quite young to be going in a forward facing car seat!?
Like others have said, do what you think is right!

i thought they said it better to go by age then weight as its all todo with ther neck muscles not what the sit can handle ?

I didnt know that you know and stephen was in a FF car seat around Ryans age, thoughat luckily we had no accidents or anything with him so am feeling very genuinly upset at the moment that I put him at risk.

Imogens not going to be 21lbs for a long time yet so she might not be in her seat till shes a year old  but as far as concerned her saftey is paramount.

if he has outgrown his RF seat then yes. what does it say about the weight he should be on your instructions? mine says 9kg so thats 20lb. i think the weight of the baby in them is a clear guideine i dont know why they say they have to be under 9kg for a RF seat.. or FF but i would assume its better for him to go in the bigger one if he is over 9kg and can sit unaided. ask ur health visitor

The rear facing one's safer so I'd stick with that for the time being. Developmentally a 5 month old is very different from a 9 month old & I wouldn't risk it. If he's outgrown his current rear facing seat I'd get one of those clever ones that go both ways, but keep it RF for the time being.

George is 8 1/2 months old now and still in a rear facing seat. He weighs 22lb and can sit unaided for quite a while.

I went into Mothercare a few weeks ago to enquire about front facing seats and was totally put off by the assistant. She said to leave him in rear facing as long as possible as it was by far the safest way for baby to travel. I was quite surprised as she was putting me off buying something so I thought she must know what she's talking about.

Personally I think at 5 months their muscles aren't developed enough even the baby may be on the large size.

everywhere says if your child is over 9kg then it should be in a rearfacing seat.. and babies can only go in ff seat if they are at 9kg..or their head goes over the back of the carseat.

Forward-facing child seat
Group 1: for children weighing 9-18 kgs (20-40 lbs) roughly from 9 months - 4 years.

Once children have outgrown a rearwards facing seat, the best option is to use a Group 1 seat with an integral harness, the large area of the harness helps to reduce the risk of injury if there is a crash. The bottom attachment between the legs will also prevent the child from sliding under, and out of, the harness.

They can be used in the front or rear of the car, but it is safer to put them in the rear, especially if there is a passenger airbag in the front.

Once again, it is safest to keep children in this type of system until they have outgrown it. Only move your child to a booster seat once they have exceeded the maximum weight for the child seat, or the top of their head is higher than the top of the seat.

Keep your baby in a rearward-facing seat for as long as possible. They are ready to move up when they have exceeded the appropriate weight, or the top of their head is higher than the top of the seat.

ive been thinking about this recently too..mia is getting too heavy for the other one and always trys to sit up in it...

but her safety is more important so she'll have to wait lol :shakehead:
