Hi, I'm 8 weeks today and have had really bad sickness since finding out I was pregnant (was actually one of the reasons I tested)

My question is I can't hold anything down, some days I can't even drink water, so I haven't been able to take any folic acid and I'm worrying I'll be doing some harm, especially after my Doctor said "you must must start taking folic acid if you haven't already" Has anyone else shared this experience and everything been okay, I'm making myself ill worrying about it!!

My mother always says "when we were younger we didn't take any of these supplements" and we are all fine.
Ideally it is best to take folic acid, but more than likely your baby will be okay.
I actually have a family member that didn't take any folic acid through any of her pregnancy and has had 4 healthy babies.
Just try to take it when you can lovely. x

If your sickness is that bad, you probably have hyperemesis. You need to get meds to stop the sickness, folic acid can wait

Yep... I had hyperemesis and I didn't have my folic acid from 4 weeks for the whole pregnancy. She is totally fine! :) xx

I didn't have vitamin D either and water made me so sick I just had basically diet coke the whole time once I could drink again. I didn't touch vegetables the whole time as they made me sick. I had a few different tablets too. Honestly just do whatever you have to in order to help the sickness and baby will be fine :) xxx

Ask the doctor for the tablets that dissolve under your tongue xxx

I think it is really important to take the folic acid. I know people say they have been ok, or people they know have been but it is recommended for a reason. I know it's not easy when you are so sick though. You can get really small folic acid tabs, you could try taking it with a tiny sip of water?
I also agree that you may have hyperemesis and if that's the case, the doctor will give you meds and that could help you to keep fluid and food down xx

I take a Vit D spray which you might be able to tolerate better. It's from Holland and Barrett :)

Are you struggling with just a standard folic acid table or a mult-vitamin such as pregnacare? If I recall a lot of women struggle with one or the other but then tolerate the other better. Ideally best to take and if you are struggling make sure you are eating foods which contain it too.

StarryL if its to the stage where you physically can't take it because you cant keep it down or sip water then it's defo hg. Xxx

yes I had this problem with my second the tablets made me throw up. The Dr told me not to worry but I did. So I googled foods high in natural folic acid, and then I ate as much as I could keep down. See of you can find any natural juice high in those ingredients and drink juice with it in. Make some smoothie with them in. Anyway you can keep some down. Xxx

Thank you for all your helpful comments, I'm going to try and get in the Doctors tomorrow. Although last time I tried this I was told 'sickness is normal in pregnancy and unfortunately it's not always a nice experience being pregnant!" So I never actually got to see the Doctor regarding my sickness.

It's the normal folic acid tabets I've been trying, but to be honest I can't face any. Had headache for a couple of days and tried taking paracetamol and they just come back up too, even tried crushing them and just sipping bits of water with it in but still never went down. It's getting to the point where I can't even brush my teeth without been sick so really getting me down, I don't want to sound ungrateful as I am really pleased I am pregnant but this is my second so feeling guilty to my little girl that I'm so ill all the time :-( x

It does sound like hyperemesis to me if you literally can't keep anything down. I had it too and it was horrendous. I felt sick every single second of the day. I felt bad complaining as we tried for this baby but it was hard going, esp when you have other children to look after. Hope the doctor is helpful this time xx

StarryL I'm in the same boat again (unfortunately) with my first I wasn't able to keep my vitamins down & all went well, but I did worry like mad, so this time I've started taking it literally as I'm going to sleep, like swallow it as my head hits pillow. They're real small (Morrisons own, about 5mms size) so don't need water to get it down.

Hope you feel better soon! I just gagged brushing my teeth just now, only managed to brush the front teeth. I got the same response too going back to the doctors tomorrow due to being dehydrated so gonna demand something. I too feel guilty I can't play with my daughter like usual, I can't bathe her cause of the smell of the water etc and it breaks my heart. Hope you get a better response from the doctors this time xxxx
