Finally mentioned to the midwife about the pelvic pain that i have been suffering with for the last 14 weeks and she is referring me for physio

Just wondered what to expect at the appointment, and how long it took for the appointment?

I was annoyed at what was supposed to be be my first physio appointment!

I had to cancel it the day before as I had a cold and didn't want to take a cold into the hospital. Anyway, when I got through, all my MW had put me forward for a group advice session! This was despite me being in pain at the time and really needing an actual hands-on session with a physiotherapist. A couple of friends who have had SPD had the same thing - a talk when they thought they were going to see the physio on a one on one.

Might just be our area though and hopefully you will get better results, but might be worth being prepared for a general talk rather than treatment just incase.

I guess it depends on where you are and who you get, but I had my first one yesterday and it was fantastic! You can see some posts about it in the third trimester section. She asked me a lot of questions about the pain and other things related to my pregnancy, then she had me do some bending in different positions with her hands on different parts of my lower back and then she felt the front of my pelvis while I was laying down. This was all to find out which side was worse and how I was misaligned. She found that my left side was way out of line with my body (I KNEW I felt like my leg was longer- even before I was pregnant!). Because of this, she had me do a couple of movements (pushing my legs against her body in different positions) in order to get my pelvis realigned. I'll be honest, it was SORE... But afterwards it was fantastic. I was no longer limping and I got the best sleep last night. I feel really good today, too. My sacrum is still sore, but i have been sitting at a desk all day so that isn't a surprise. I have been given some exercises and if I stick to them there is a good chance my pelvis will stay where it is meant to be. If not, I can call and get it pushed back again. Ha... eww... I have another appointment 8 weeks from now but was told I could try to come sooner if I needed to. I wasn't given a support band or belt or anything. She said as long as I do the exercises I shouldn't need it because my muscles will do the same thing.

My appointment lasted about 30 minutes and the physio asked me loads of questions about where the pain was and whether anything helped before he got his hands on me.

He got me to do a few exercises whilst he was looking at and had his hands on my lower back (I had to pull up my top for that bit). All this loosened my back up and he told me that I had very strong back muscles which should help prevent the pain from getting too bad. He also said it would help my recovery in the 13 weeks after the birth.

He then gave me a hip strap and showed me how to put it on properly and told me to come back if I get too big for the strap.

I felt much better after the appointment, the loosening exercises had really helped.

Hope you have a good appointment :D

Thanks for replying - not looking forward to the bending bits but its got to be done!
