My son is 11 weeks old and continues to fall asleep while we are trying to feed him and sometimes struggles to finish a whole bottle.

He's putting on weight but I'm just concerned about The time it takes to feed him. My husband started a feed at 11.30, baby fell asleep for half hour and then woke up and did finish the bottle but took another hour to do so.

Is this normal? I remember my mother in law came round one day and she managed to get him to take all the milk in less than 15 mins. I'm so confused!

Try changing the teat sizes on your bottles if it's a fairly recent thing. He might not be getting the milk out quickly enough and nodding off because of all the sucking being like a dummy.

Going up a teat size worked for us too. I think my son was about the same age as yours was when we did it because he was taking forever to feed and falling asleep. Be prepared for it to be a it messy at first as they get used to the faster flow. I seem to remember a lot ending up on his bib at first so I'd make up an extra oz or so to factor this in. He went from taking 45 mins on a bottle to 10/15 mins (he's a guzzler, still wolfs down 9oz in 10 mins at 23 weeks!!!) Hope this helps.x

My baby is bf and falls asleep for a feed no matter what time of day or however many naps hes had. He still feeds while asleep sometimes but if not I take him off the breast. If that doesn't wake him up I put him down. If he stays asleep he's full, if not I carry on feeding him

You could always try stroking his cheeks and feet and gentlyblowing on his face too keephim aawake but they've never worked for me

We went up a teet size last month and yes it was messy as milk went all over his bib lol..

He seemed to drink better this morning but it's odd at other times he'd take forever and only have drunk 60ml and be content?

When in doubt...

:poke:

I'm joking. Kinda.
If blowing, foot tickling, gentle prodding doesn't wake him, I'd assume he's full and tired. However, the ladies above make excellent points about teat sizes, and going up one can definitely make finishing the bottle a lot easier. And messier.

Remember babies are still people, albeit teeny ones... Sometimes they just aren't as hungry as others. As long as his weight gain is roughly in line with what it should be, he'll be just fine. Xx
