I have an expressing question.... Keen to introduce a bottle every couple days - to share with hubby, more flexibility if i want to leave LO for a short time and means i have some freedom when out with baby if public breastfeeding is difficult.

So.... Once i have a small amount expressed in a bottle in the fridge - i can add to that over the next few feeds, right? How long will it keep in fridge? The MW seemed to think 'syphoning' lol for want of a better word a little after feeds wouldnt be too taxing/time consuming and shouldnt affect my milk supply too much. I didnt want to spend hours feeding LO on the breast and then spend downtime between feeds expressing so she said bit at a time rather than try get a bottle asap). This should work well for a bottle every couple days.

X

Hey, I don't know the answer but have also wondered about this as I have bought some milk storage bags and don't want to freeze a tiny amount, so wondered if I could build up over a day and then freeze. xxx

Yep this is fine to do. Infact I just used to pop the whole pump in the fridge & pick up where I left off on the next session x

Same as Sarah Louise although I never do it like that as I was worried about it going back to room temp while you were expressing the next time
, then being put in fridge again. You can add to a bottle that's been in fridge and keep it there for 3 days (some say 5 so I always go by the least to be safe) from first lot of milk, or put in the freezer.

You can add to it during the day, not over more than 1 day though !

It keeps in a fridge for 5 days - back of the fridge though not the door! This is official NHS guidelines :)

You can freeze it for 6 months! :)

Yeah heard some people say u can add to it over 2-3 days as long as its used within 5-6 days of start of expressed milk collated...

So if u get a bit day 1, more day 2, finish day 3 - you've just a couple more days to use it if stored in fridge...

Worth a try... Thanks ladies xx

I just popped the pump still attached to the bottle back in the fridge and carried on with it until I had 7oz. Generally though I never went over 12 hours on one bottle. Labelled it with the day and used within a couple of days.

It really depends on your supply - it would take me 3 goes to get 7oz but others can get that in one sitting.

Am I reading right? I expressed some 3 hours ago n it's been in the fridge so am I ok to just now add some more milk Ive expressed I'm am summing at room temp to the cold milk? Xxxx

Kelly's mom website has some great info for expressing and mixing milk.
You can add freshly expressed milk to fridge temperature milk if its been in just 24 hours. Milk that has been in for longer you need to wait for the next batch to cool right down then you can mix several lots together within a 5 day period.
Breast milk when it goes off has a distinct smell - you'll know if its no good!
I always did the sniff test before giving expressed breast milk and once it had turned sour and the smell was awful!
