Ending mat leave with a change of career

Mat leave ends in March but I don't want to go back to my job. I'm planning on applying for other jobs in a different career altogether but my mom mentioned yesterday that I might have to pay some money back from my maternity or something? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Check your terms and conditions at work, that's pretty standard am that u need to be back a certain amount of time before u wouldn't need to pay it back

I work in the nhs and in our policy basically we have to let HR know if we plan on returning, if youv says yes then dont go back i think thats when you have to pay it back.

Not sure if you have a certain amount of to change your mind.

Ask HR for your mat policy.

It depends on whether ur on smp or have maternity pay through your work. If it's just basic smp and nothing from your company then you don't have to pay any back x

As far as I know it's through them, I put everything into them and didn't have to go to the job centre.

Maternity allowance is the one you claim through the job centre if you haven't been with an employer long enough to claim SMP I think. If you've been paid through your employer it will be SMP which you don't have to pay back. If your employer pays enhanced maternity pay over and above what they legally have to pay they can claim this part back. As others have said you need to check what their policy is as some employers will claw it back and others won't xx

If you get 90% for 6 weeks, and then SMP (approx. £140 a week) for the next 33 weeks, then this is paid by your company to you, but the funds actually come from the government so you don't need to pay any of this back. If you get anything on top of that you may well need to pay it back, it just depends on what is in your company policy.

I get less than SMP as I worked part-time so I get £108 weekly until my mat leave ends as far as I'm aware. I'll ring to confirm but it seems I won't need to pay any back?

I got both company and smp? I had more or less my full wage the 9m i was off.
