I got Ellie weighed last night. First time for nearly a month as I have gone back to work. She has dropped from staying constantly around the 50th percentile to around 30-35th percentile. :( She is weighed 15lb 12oz.

I am sure it is because she won't take much from a bottle while at nursery. Mondays she typically takes 1oz and then 2oz from her 2 feeds, she improves through the week but the most she has ever taken is 3oz and then 6oz. The HV advice was to really crack on with weaning as she is almost 26 weeks. So I need to really push now and try and get her taking 3 meals a day. We have only been doing 1 at lunch time.

I feel a bit down over it as because we couldn't afford for me to be on SMP I had to go back to work when she was only 5 months due to only getting full pay while on maternity leave for 4 months.

Awww hun don't feel down. I think that is still a good weight for her age.
Remember that those charts are based on formula fed babies anyway.

As long as she is happy and healthy that is all that matters.

Good luck with the scary world of weaning

Thanks, but according to the chart title it is a chart based on breastfeeding.

Oh really!!!! I still think she is a good weight. Gabriella weighs 12lb 5oz

Ellie was 14lb 3oz whe she was 4 months. She gained less than a 1lb (13oz) in 6 weeks. Which is why I am unhappy over it.

what foods is she having so far hun. I am sure when she starts more food the weight will pile on.

I dont think you working is to blame, she is prob just getting used to bottle not boob. A lot of women stop at 6 months anyway!!

Good luck sweety xxx

Is she quite an active baby? Finn has always been active and started crawling at 6 and a half months he also stopped putting on weight... I hadn't taken him to be weighed in ages and he had dropped down from 50th to nearly 25th  he was eating and drinking okay so I think a lot of it was due to him burning so much off. His weight is slowly coming back up again. He eats so much now but moves around the place all day so just doesn't seem to get too chubby!

Hi Nicky

Please don't give yourself a hard time about going back to work - you are doing it for the right reasons and Elena wont suffer for it.

Here's a link from Kellymom, it's interesting reading about how much milk your baby needs when she's away from you: http://www.kellymom.com/newman/17feed_baby_working_moms.html

Agreeing with Tina, I think Elena's weight is fine for her age. How much did she put on since her last weigh-in? Alot of babies weight gain slows down a bit but if the baby is seen to be developing well and healthy then there's not need for concern.

It seems like babies weight seems to be a much bigger issue in the UK than in Denmark. Leorah will see our HV this week for the first time in 2 months. I also read babies weight gain slows right down after 6 months and they say if it didn't we'd end up with huge, giant babies! I am sure I read somewhere that Budge decided not to have her girls weighed regularly and when they were a year old they all weighed the same and were perfectly in the right weight bracket. As long as everything else is ok I am sure you don't have to worry and as for food they say until a year its about exploration and learning and babies nutrition mainly comes from BM or formula. I have been doing a lot of research on weaning as Leorah will have special nutritional needs and it says babies should be able to go at their own pace with solids otherwise you can end up with fussy children with food phobias. You know what's right for Ellie don't be pressured by your HV

Thanks for the replies and links. Up until then she had been having veg, I had tried her on fruit but she wasn't as keen on it, and banana porridge. In the last week or so I have given her rusks on the evening to chew on and she has had 1 roast chicken and swede with gravy dinner.

However since last thursday her amount of solid lunch she has been taking has dropped suddenly. I fed her on friday (my day of) she started OK but after a couple of spoonfuls she started gagging / choking (it was not different than she had previously) and then that put her off having any more. The nursery staff think it is probably due to a slight cold. She has had a very runny nose and been a bit snuffly but other than that has seemed well in herself. Hopefully they are right and she will start showing more interest again.
