Hi

I need some help as part of a project I'm doing at work. We're looking at ear piercing and when is the right time to allow your child to have them done.

Some cultures believe that piercing ears can have health benefits (acupunture pressure points). Evidence of ear-lobe piercing is seen in ancient civilisations dating over 6000 years and many ancient African, Aboriginal and Nordic cultures all pierced their ears.

I'd love to hear your opinions on this...have you had your baby done? Any stories, experiences etc would be really appreciated.

Thanks x

oooh thanks for that....thats a great help.

Didn't realise there had already been one. And I don't wanna start a riot!!!

I think you'll find plenty of help for your project on those two threads!

OK - don't want to start a fight, but as I don't belong to a culture (like those you stated) that [ummm what's the phrase I'm looking for  ] it's standard (do you know what I mean? LOL - I'm dumb) IMO, and I'll stress my opinion, it should be left until the child is old enough to deal with the cleaning etc by themselves. To me that means 10+ but I'm sure it's very different for other people.

age 13 is the minumum age for my daughter

never for my son - don't like it on blokes (obviously when he reaches 18 I wouldn't be able to stop him).

that's final

Oh dear.... to anyone who doesn't think ear piercing is an option for tiny tots... don't come to Spain... they pierce them in the hospitals here when they pop out... ... Don't worry I will be informing our local hospital that if my daughter comes out with extra holes in her ears, I'll be suing them.

Their reason for piercing them so young is that they can tell whether its a boy or girl by the ears.... well as Spaniards are so bloody sexist anyway... you know a boy from a girl... because girls ONLY have pink things... boys ONLY have blue things... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: And to top it all my mummy told me that boys have dangly bits and girls have fannies... I would have hoped the hospital can tell the difference .... no wait they can't, that's why I was having a boy and now Im having a girl and have a blue nursery to prove it... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

not all spaniards are like that though squiglet. Don't let a few represent a whole nation

 LOL... I'm quite scathing towards those annoying British people-.... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

The thing with piercing as the Spanish do (I am half Spanish and my mother put her foot down and said no to them being done as a baby) is that as the ear lobes grow with the child, the ear piercing remains high and close to the gristle part of the ear rather than central on the lobe itself. Only good if you have *tiny* ear lobes.

My sister's were pierced soon after she was born and now look very odd so high up the lobe. Ruins the look of most earrings.

Well unless my sisters and others in the family all had botched piercings

I've seen some women with larger ear lobes with piercings further down the lobe but many I notice seem too high, at least to my eyes.

I'll happily be proved wrong though :P But when a baby is wee there really is little there to actually pierce in the first place

:rotfl: at sammystar mary and budge!! That is exactly what I was thinking!! And the forum had been so quiet recently!!!!!!
