My baby boy has been quiet yet mardy and hot all day. This evening when i got home from work i gave him some medised and he was the same but went to sleep about 45 mins to an hour later and slept till gone 11 this evening. He is awake now but quite mardy coming for cuddles every minute or so and his temperature is 38.

Do i need to call the nhs direct or just keep an eye on it. It has never been that high ever before and he has never really been this clingy. He is happy to play for a minute or so provided he can moan for a minute after.

Please help :(

hey hun didnt want to read & run  id call the nhs or get him seen by his GP today if he still has a temp of 38 because this is how my LO was when he had tonsilitis a few weeks ago. He was fine one minute then clingy and cuddly the next. so if u are wrried and think he is off colour see a doc hun xxxx

have you given him any medicine? 1 spoon calpol - see what happens if nothing then 1 spoon ibuprofen. strip him off and get a fan. that should cool him.
make sure you try and get him to drink although i doubt you'll have success.

If you're ever worried it's best to call NHS direct 0845 46 47. Where have you taken his temperature? If it's under his arm you have to add on 1 degree.

Like Budge said, try to cool him down and give him lots of cuddles but if he's really not himself either take him to the doctors or call nhs direct.

Hope he's better soon

Thanks for your advice, I gave him medised which helped him sleep but didnt really do anything for his temperature, we tried a coolish bath but that didnt help, although he played in the bath which was the first time all evening.

I rang nhs direct at 5 oclock this morning and they said just to keep him cool and i took him to the doctor first thing this morning cause he woke up crying and shaking, he checked his chest and then in his mouth and said his throat is inflamed and gave him some antibiotics. I asked him when his fever would go down and he said quite quickly hopefully and told me to give him paracetamol stuff but it hasnt gone down, its still the same and he is still not happy and prefers to be sat snuggled on my knee.

It is really difficult to give him his antibiotics and medised though cause he wont let you near his mouth with the spoon or a syringe.

I have even tried the cooling strips but he ripped it straight off.

I am at a loss at to what else i can do now. Do i wait and call the docs again tomorrow if his temp has gone down or do i ring nhs direct again?

i thought it shounded like e had a throat infection , if you cannot get any medicine in to him then speak to ur doctor for advice as he must have the antibiotics.

also as a bit of advice, medised should not be used in children under 2 anymore as the antihistamine builds up in their systems to much - also my FIL is a nurse and when Christopher had tonsilitis a few weeks ago i asked him about the odd dose of medised at night. He told me not to as the antihistamine's natural aim is to shut down part of the immune system - he needs his immune system now so that he can fight the infection.

the peadiatritian on the childrens ward also said not to give medised - its poor at lowering temps and again the antihistamine in it does them no good at all

your best bet is to give 10ml calpol then 5ml nurofen every four hours i found that givin calpol then 2 hours later give nurofrn so that he has something in between the hour hours that he cant have any more calpol..if that makes sense?

if you cant get him to have fluids/medicine then do contact your doctor again hun - keep us updated

He is going back to the docs this afternoon, he slept better last night but woke up at normal time hot and shakey again. The only thing he will eat at the moment is raisens so i coated the raisens with the amoxicillyn, he didnt get every drop but he got most of it. I still cant get the paracetomol into him though and i have tried so many differant ways :S. The doc didnt see a problem with him having medised as i dont have any calpol till i go to the chemist later, plus it is only very very rarely i give it to him other than the last couple of days, i also cant give him nurofen cause of his asthma.

He is having plenty of milk and the odd juice but he wont touch water he never has.

Thank you for your advice :)

aww hun i feel for you i know how horrid it is..let me know what the doc says as its important he gets all of his amoxycillin as otherwise it wont clear the infection fully . it took me and OH to pin christopher down to get his pennicillin into him with a syringe it was heartbreaking as he was so distressed but i knew he had to have it.

Yeah it takes pinning Leif down to, unfortunately there is no one here to help me today so having to try and think of other ways to get it into him.

hmmmm yes i had to manage on my own durin the day and i know how hard it is single handed. cant remember how i managed it i had to lie him down on the floor on the V pillow and do my best to hold him and squirt :rotfl: could you mix it wth his milk ? or juice ? or in a yougurt ?

is he still runnin a high temp ? hope he gets better soon hun - keep updating

Yes he still has a high temp, i just called the gp's cause his temp is now 39.5 and it took the receptionist about 20 mins to answer the phone to tell me there was noone there that could help me and that she didnt know what i could do!! I have just changed doctors cause the receptionists where rude and then i get a doc with an unhelpful receptionist.

So i called NHS direct and they said as we know it is steming from an infection then we can just try and keep the temp down with paracetamol (how!!!!???? when he wont blinking take it!!!) and if it goes above 40 then speak to the gp or nhs direct again, also he is still responsive so that is a good thing. So i guess i will have to just keep trying till 3.50 when his appointment is.

I have managed to give him some calpol in about 8 oz of milk and he drank all but 2 oz of it so hopefully that will help.

He seems to have perked up this evening :) he went round to my mums for a couple of hours and he was playing there to and fell asleep as we were picking him up, now he is rolling about on my knee feeling a bit hot again.
