Just been reading through my labour notes and noticed that under where they have written about my blood loss they have added that I have an atomic uterus!!!!
Been googling and cannot find what it means, anyone know????
Its atonic. Means without tone. Ie not contracting down after delivery as it should so you bleed more.
edited in the morning as I can't type much on the web from my phone.
Basically. sometimes after runnign the marathan that is labour the muscle fibres in your uterus are too tired for the last bit (the placenta and then contracting down to squeeze the ends of your blood vessels closed when the placenta separates.) The injection that you are offered to help deliver the placenta helps the uterus contract for one last burst but sometimes you would still need a bit more later if it is not staying contracted.
Thanks for replies! Thanks for correcting me smile, definitely looks like atomic on the notes!!!
Makes sense from your description, I had to have 2 drips in to get my uterus to contract afterwards and consultant showed me how to massage my own uterus too to help it along!!
atomic would be WAY be interesting! you could be atomic womb woman and i'll be your sidekick, syntocinon girl and we'd hang around labour wards stopping everyone bleeding with our superpowers!
