...if you forget to put the car through it's MOT? I'm really worried as it was due a couple of days ago, it completely slipped my mind (well, after having Isaac not long ago, everything's slipping my mind!) and I'm really scared. Do I get a fine, penalty points or what? Really can't afford to pay anything much at the moment :?

As far as i am aware its against the law to drive it without MOT unless you are driving to a test centre or for repairs. Also i think insurance is invalid if you are driving about with no MOT.

Soory forgot to add, no fines or points, just dont drive it until you can get MOT sorted :)

No fine like with car tax but can't drive the car till u have an MOT apart from to the garage

It's ok on your driveway un-MOT'd, if you were to drive it without MOT it's a fine iirc. Youo may drive it to or from an appointment for an MOT.

Don't worry my OH forgot for 2 weeks!!!!!! Basically it invalidates your insurance so if you were caught you could be done for a few things - BUT all you need to do now is call a garage, book it in and only drive it to the MOT and you're fine :)
If (by bad luck!) you were stopped on the way to the MOT they'd just need to call the garage and confirm you were on your way there :)

*PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

I feel better now, thanks girlies. I drove it today (for the first time since having section  ) and suddenly remembered. I have been feeling awful all day.

PHEW!

I forgot with pregnancy head on. Was a week before i realised and i work at a garage!!! I was lucky not to get caught as i was going to and from work everyday.

Ohhhh i thought you had 2 weeks after it runs out to get it done but im obviously thinking of car tax!! :o Mine ran out on 11th september and dint get it done till 20th

Can drive to the MOT garage. If you get stopped by old bill have to prove you have appointment booked.

U have 10 days to get it sorted and re tested if it fails ;) so u might be thinking of that

I'm just glad I'm not the only one that forgets...happens to the best of us...even ones who work in a garage

I cannot tell you how relieved I am... you girls are good!

For police officers they are hardly going to stop you as it's not on any records or PNC check they usually do before stopping a car. So unless you really were a random stopcheck nobody would know anyway. But if you were pulled over it's not the biggest fish in the pan compared to someone knowingly driving w/out insurance or tax. Just get it done as soon as you can really :)

I think the main thing with it is that you can't buy road tax without the MOT certificate, so as long as your tax isnt due anytime soon... lol. x

I think, don't quote me on it though! but I think garages are now registering MOTs so they correspond with the DVLA. I don't think its in place everywhere just yet.

OH drove his car at the beginning of the year with no MOT for about 3 months. Not on purpose, we just thought it was in the summer and not in the spring. A genuine mistake. We didn't hear anything

My Dad owned an MOT station until recently and it's true that each MOT is now done through a computerised system which is linked to road tax, insurance companies and the police so when they do a Reg check it would show up that you have no MOT...

It also makes your insurance invalid. You really need to get it done as soon as you can. I know an MOT is a pain in the rear but at the end of the day you have to remember that an MOT is basically a quick safety/health check for your vehicle. It checks the vital elements like brakes, tyres, seat belts, lights, steering, emissions and even the horn!

You don't have 2 weeks for car tax iirc. Its pretty much should be done before the 1st of the month its due to start.

Its a bit of a myth about this 2 week grace period when taxing the car. If you get caught on the road by camera etc and your tax disc has expired its a fine or some such. Also you may invalidate your insurance.

As you can buy online and from PO these days also there really is no excuse to not have car tax or be without a disc.

From the DirectGov website

If you don’t tax or SORN your vehicle

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) carries out a computer check each month, as well as roadside checks to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. You could face an automatic penalty of £80 as well as a minimum fine of £1000. Your vehicle could be clamped, impounded or even crushed.

Update...it failed! Something needs welding together...no idea what

Such a pain in the rear end, can't get it repeaired till end of the week. I wait 6 weeks till after section before driving and now I have to wait ages again!
