I work in operating theatres and as well as being surrounded by loads of nurses most of them are mums! We unfortunatly deal with the stitching of bad birthing tears (sorry) all the girls were saying if you massage almond oil or even baby oil in to the perinium every week from bout 24 weeks it can seriously reduce the chance of tearing, i checked this with the gynea doc and she said it's true so don't be shy lol

What do you lot think worth a try i think!!

Hi

Ive never heard of this worth a try if it does help prevent it!
Katrina

I did this and it was SO time-consuming and I ended up having the scissors taken to me anyway!

It may be worth a go (and fun for your OH  ) but with 15% of births needing episiotomy and over 20% C-section I wouldn't bank on it  The oil's dead cheap :)

Trixi maybe try wheatgerm oil instead? Does much the same thing.

I also heard that olive oil from 34 weeks does an excellent job.

I have actually been doing this everyday in the shower recently (oh-er musses!!  ) but with no oil. Would the oil make the difference then?

my friend used olive oil through out her pregnancy and never tore, she swears by it. my midwife advised perineal massage which i had a go at but i found it uncomfortable as i was quite sensitive. i did tear both on the perineum but mainly my labia. i think it does work if you can do it

Hi,

If you can do it, I would highly recommend you do.

I didn't use oil, and no way did it every day, but when dh and I were dtd or leading up to it, we made it part of the foreplay (sorry, far tmi!!!).

I have never had any tears with any of mine (this is no.4), and just had a tiny graze with my first baby.

Do have a go, it's worth it.

I am like Heather i have never done this and was cut with my first i believe from being induced and drugged to the nines and having the worst time ever, but with my other 2 (this is my no4 too) i never tore at all just a tiny graze inside, i think a lot to do with it is how your birth is, both of my other 2 were water babies born in a birthing pool and i believe that helps soften that area, and thats what i will be doing again :D
