ok so my first dr visit was at about 6 weeks....she grumbled over writing me a medical note cos it was on my word that i was pregnant...she took my blood pressure and organised my midwife, who visited and took basic health info once (cos i was going away after that)

now, my second dr appointment, i was home for one day so i thought i would check in with the dr seeing as i was now 15 weeks....and had had no midewife care inbetween....all she did was take my blood pressure, and then asked what i wanted!!!! i asked her about vaccinations for my trip abroad and she told me to go to a specialist travel clinic

am i weird to expect her to do a bit more? Like, maybe poke my belly or weigh me..or anything???

I feel a bit left out that nobody has given my belly a professional poke :? or does that only happen on childbirth education programmes LOL

Nobody's poked my stomach yet (good job, it would be like jabbing the pilsbury dough boy  )
I don't think they do much until later on. I've only seen the midwife once so far at 8 weeks. I see her again at 16 weeks.

No one from the Spanish health system poked my belly or even officially confirmed I was pregnant till I was 19 weeks pregnant... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: How easy would it be to make it all up...

I had my belly poked on Monday for the first time, don't worry you'll be p1ssed off with it by the end :rotfl:

I had my tummy poked at my booking in appointment with the MW - a bit pointless given it was early days.

Aren't you meant to have a 16 week checkup with the MW, where she checks you blood pressure, your urine and listens to baby's heartbeat?

How come you haven't got a midwife?

The care of pregnant women suck's now!!

I dont have a MW either i have to go to my local hospital for all my appointments  iv only seen 2 MW for appointments in 27 weeks.

As for Doc's dont get me started on them!! :shakehead:

There rubbish! I saw the midwife just before my 12 week scan. and that was only because i phoned up and said i hadnt heard anything yet. then she took some notes then she said as long as everything is ok see you when ure 25 weeks!!! so i havent had anything at all

i have one assigned, but because i travel around with my job living away from home, a different place every 6 weeks, and as im pretty much permanently out of my local authority area , i cant get any nhs care unless i did a drop in as an emergency or something.

Ah right, I see. Could you get in touch with your assigned MW and see if you can get to see her when you are back in your area?

My Doctor is rubbish, she didn't even know that I was entitled to have a 12 week scan and didn't know what hospital I would have the baby in. I dread to think how limited her knowledge would be if she had to give me any specific medical advice!

the one day i was back she (my midwife) was on holiday lol

im next back home in 2 months time!

i got my anomaly scan booked (private) for before then though so thats the most important thing :D

ok... I'm on a mission of education :) work in NHS so know a bit and also know the NHS is rubbish - but that is due to too many managers and not enough money - the staff that work there need your support!!

1) re belly poking - no value in doing routinely until after 25 weeks :)

2)re doctors doing pregnancy tests - again - use the same ones as sold for home testing so would only do to confirm if they were worried about an ectopic or something. They don't need to confirm pregnancy as you have told them - they are actually having faith in you and trusting that you are telling the truth :)

3) re scans - your poor GP has no influence there - they write and ask the hopsital to see you but it is actually the midwives and the scanners that sort things out after that - the GP can ask for earlier until they are blue in the face but if there is no room there is no room! (i agree there should be room but this is down to the hopsital managers not the doctors who actually WANT the scans done on time). Obviously scans will be more overbooked if people (and there are some) lie about symptoms like pain or bleeding to get a scan before they are due one...... at least noone on the forum here would ever consider doing anything like that i hope!!

4) re blood pressure - this is important - that is why your GP did it when you went to see them.

5) re weight..... again - absolutely no value except to work out if you are over or under weight BEFORE you start putting on baby weight.

smile gets down off high horse.... :) this post is not supposed to come across as angry or bossy - I just see the same points made again and again... if you think your doctor should do more in your 10min appointment then why not ask them so they at least get a chance to explain why they don't do a lot of the things that you see on tv :)

take care :)
