Do I need a pump?

My friend has offered me her breast pump for a very low price. I thought this sounded like a good idea without really knowing much about it, but I'm trying to only get things we definitely need before baby's here.

I mentioned it to my mum and she couldn't understand why I'd need one and it's made me question it too. I always just assumed when you bf you do it with your boob (ok I also thought my friend was having me on with th breast pump when she had her first and that no such thing existed!)

Is this something I'll need? I've just had a read on here about amazing people expressing all the time for babies who can't feed normally, but assuming all goes well is it necessary and what are the benefits?

She's offered me a lot and I'm trying to work out what to take - she had a lot more room than us!

We bought a manual as I thought I would just be pumping the odd bottle here and there. C couldn't latch so I exclusively expressed for the first eight weeks. Hubby just popped out to get me a madela swing.

My pump was a god send but until C came along I didn't know how much I would use it. I now only use it to pump a few feeds if I am heading out.

I wouldn't say it was essential though Hun. Xx

If its a good price then it's prob worth it hun

I breast fed H u til he was 11 months but I used a pump so that hubby could get involved in feeds. Admittedly I didn't use it a lot, but I also got it cheap from a friend so to me it was worth it.

Tbh I wish I'd of had it a bit earlier than I did ( prob got it around 2 month mark) as H went through a phase f not taking the bottle x

If its a good deal if prob go for it as well. I bf, but had a pump to express. It meant I could leave DD with OH or MIL for a few hours without having to resort to formula.

It's def not essential, but exclusively breast feeding until weaning is hard, and sometimes it's good to be able to have a stash so someone else can do odd feeds. Iykwim

I used mine to keep DD on bm after I went back to work at 6months. Xxx

Same as becky really i fed till he was 12 months so a pump was an essential to me as if you need to go out or just want hubby to take over a feed if your tired its fab. I didny use one till 5weeks ish so its not an essential straight away you could see how you get on but if its a good pump and cheap may be worth getting it. I had medela swing to which was brilliant.

I have just started pumping with Alex at 7 weeks. At first it was to see if a) i could express and b) if Alex would take a bottle. As the others have said its nice to have a back up in case you ever need to leave bubbs or need a break (breastfeeding is very very demanding).

I now express every morning for about 10 - 20 minutes using my electric medela while little man has his feed and i then give him what i express as his last feed before bed. Since doing so he is sleeping for much longer at night yay!!

I would say invest in an electric pump as they are much easier to use
