My son is 3 in Feb and at his 2 yr review it was flagged up that his speech was behind. We had an assessment done in October and again were told the same thing. I'm now awaiting a follow up. He starts pre school in March, but I'm so worried he'll struggle to communicate. He says lots and lots of words and is slowly stringing sentences together, but he's still very much behind and no matter how much I try to encourage him to say things/use flash cards etc he isn't interested and won't entertain the idea

Has anyone's else been in this situation with their toddler? I feel like us not attending baby groups etc has made this so much worse and I can't help but blame myself for holding him back.

Oh Toni, you can't blame yourself as children develop at different stages. My little boy is 3 in Feb and we are only just getting through dryer weeks where as his friends at nursery are already there. I know we are doing everything right so we are just going with it at his speed.

My frienda little boy is 3.5 and he is having speech therapy but as I said to her- there arent many people who dont talk unless there is something organically wrong such as sen.

All of a sudden with speech he can come on in leaps and bounds. My little boy reached all his physical milestones quickly and I knew his understanding was spot on then speech followed.

Is your little boy's understanding of commands, questions and items good because thats what brought me comfort before my boy was using words that others could understand (not just me)? If his understanding is good then I wouldn't worry too much xxxxxx

Thanks selina.

His understanding is very good, and at the first assessment this is what the health visitor picked up on and she said it's a very positive sign. She said he's very good with his fine motor skills and physically very forward, it's just his speech. I'm trying not to worry, but you can't help but feel left behind. We can't move forward with potty training because he struggles to communicate and gets very frustrated, then he's not willing to try at all. He manages to wee on the potty every night before bed, which is a big leap forward as he used to cry at the sight of the potty! I'm so very proud of him and maybe I expect too much and should relax a little instead of comparing him to other children *sigh* xx
