Me again.............

I was just reading a weaning book I have and it said to not give things from the deadly nightshade group before 9 months.

What on earth is a deadly nightshade? I googled it and it came back with a load of botanical information but nothing that was helpful in finding out how to avoid it or what food it is!

Tomatoes and potatoes are in that group. (Actually there is nothing in the natural world containing more toxins than potatoes, 'tis true)

The group is actually called solanicadae, wikipedia lists the following:

The family is also informally known as the nightshade family or potato family. The family includes the Datura or Jimson weed, mandrake, deadly nightshade or belladonna, capsicum (paprika, chili pepper), potato, tobacco, tomato, eggplant and petunia.

Cooper has potatoes and tomates all the time...thought they could have nearly everything from six mths??

God I didn't realsie it would be potatoes. Rudy has had loads of potato and has tried tomato too. I've never heard this advice anywhere but this book so I think I'll carry on with the 'deadly nightshade' for now.

Yes, potatoes, peppers, aubergines, tomatoes. Only because they can be an allergen, so if he's had no reaction to the potatoes all should be well.

P.s The only reason I knew this was because part of my nutrition course included the nightshade family - otherwise I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else so it must be quite rare!

xx

my neice went through at patch where tomatoes would bring her out in a rash and we discovered that it wasn't that rare. thankfully her reaction wasn't severe and it doesnt seem to have been lasting either, she can eat toms without worry now.

dammit adam has been having tobacco for a few weeks now

seriously, i have never heas of a child with a reaction to tatoes, but i have with tomatoes and aubergine so i waited until 6 months before giving those 2 and watched carefully for a reaction/ didn't introduce another new food for a few days after just incase, and actually adam does get a bit blotchy around the mouth area when he has tinned tomaotoes, but to be honest i don't give them that often coz i don't think they are that healthy, much prefer fresh ones and im sure he will grow out of it anyway.
