Hi all

Long story short I was diagnosed with pcos last month after a year of tests.

At my last ultrasound in November I had a 3cm cyst on my right ovary so at the consultation appointment last month they gave me metformin and said they will prescribe me clomid but only after they have checked this cyst has gone down.

Got a letter through the post with another ultrasound appointment on 25th April (2 weeks away), the doctor said they go down on their own usually (esp small ones).

If it's gone I will be prescribed clomid (fingers crossed) but I haven't had a period since septmber so I have it in my head that it's not gone (or I would've had a period?)

Is what I'm thinking correct? That this cyst is stopping me ovulating therefore stopping me from having a period, and the fact Ive had no period means this cyst is still there?

Thanks in advance, going crazy worrying x

I'm not an expert but I had a cyst on my ovary before and it stayed for months and I still had periods.... I would have thought that if the cyst did stop you ovulating it would only stop on that side....

Don't worry just yet, just wait for your scan, if the cyst is causing you problems then they can remove it

Hi mrs wilson. I was diagnosed with a 4-5cm cyst on my right ovary in December but was told they would leave it alone and shouldn't cause problems. Currently in tww and if no bfp going back to seek more medical advice as I do get pain in the area. I do get af every month but not very regular and I do get positive ovulation tests. Have u always had irregular periods or is this new?

Donna88 I never thought about the other side, of course if it were only the cyst causing my problems then I would ovulate every other month on my left side. Can't believe I didn't think of that! I'm hopeful again :-)

Vegas, I've always had irregular periods but I've never gone more than a couple of months without af showing up at some point....it's been 7 moths since my last one, I don't get any pain ever so maybe thats a good sign. Good luck this month hope it's your bfp x

Not sure if you have got your answer but from what I understand the liklihood is that the cyst has already gone. They do not necessarily stop your periods, it's the fact that you don't ovulate that is stopping them and this will be due to your pcos. In fact, the cyst they found could have been your body's attempt to produce a follicle that month but it never ruptured. They need to make sure it is gone encase it is something else and the clomid makes it worse. The clomid will stimutlate BOTH ovaries at the same time in the hope that at least one will give you a healthy follicle and egg.

To put it in to persepective, a follicle grows to 20mm before an egg is released so your cyst wasn't much bigger.

I hope it has gone and you can start clomid asap! x

Thanks for your reply Belfa I'm hopeful that it's gone down and v optimistic after reading that.

Would love to start clomid ASAP it's been exactly a year since we first plucked up the courage to go to our gp! Xx

I can't believe how long it's taken you to get to this stage - are your waiting times really bad? At least you're in the system now and things will hopefully move quickly for you x

I'd say it was around 6 months of tests with our gp before we got referred and then it's taken from November to March to actually see a consultant. We have been twice to the hospital to redo the bloods, ultrasound and sperm analysis. The only test we haven't had to repeat is the hsg.

Very long wait! And every time we get an appointment we get our hopes up thinking ''this time we will get some treatment' but it never is. Bit heartbreaking really but if this cyst has gone down there's nothing left to test so hopefully it really is this time! X

What were your waiting times like?

I had to wait 3months between seeing the GP and the clinic. I already new I had pcos so I got a "fast pass" but I still had 21 day bloods done (pointless as I hadn't had a period in months!) and DH had is SA. My local hospital doesn't do scans etc unless they really have to so an HSG is way out of the question for them!!

Just wanted to say good luck. I agree with the above - I don't think the cyst would stop your periods, it's more likely the pcos / hormonal imbalance which is what the clomid is for. Fx for you xxx

Thanks Londongirl! I've been on a clean eating diet to give the metformin a chance, let's hope it's good news on Friday x
