I always said if I ever have a baby I'd breastfeed. Now I'm pregnant and thinking of the future costs.

I'm curious as to the costs of equipment for breastfeeding (pumps etc). I'm just concerned that I'm going to invest in all this and if I'm unable to feed for whatever reason be totally out of pocket having to then buy bottle feed equipment.

Can anyone appease my mind?

The only thing I would recommend buying beforehand would be nipple cream and breast pads so total outlay £10.
You don't have to pump, that's a personal choice and one you don't need to make until baby is about 6 weeks (and breast feeding is established).
Definetly give it a go xx

Agree with pp - all it's going to cost you is a tube of Lansinoh (don't bother with any other brand) and some breast pads. I've spent a fortune but its by no means necessary - the beauty of bf is that you only need a baby and your boobs!

Most women only use a manual pump anyway which is £20-£25 but that's when bf is established. Xx

I'd love to say its free...

In reality for me, I spent:
£12.50 on a tt manual pump.
£20 on a medala manual pump (emergency purchase after I melted the tt one)
£6 lansinoh
£10 on gel breast things...well worth the money when you're engorged.
£50 on 4 nursing bras
£10 wasted on washable breast pads.
Loads on disposable pads. Bought tt ones when on offer. Probably about £10 a month.

I could have saved money on bras by holding off till my milk came in. The first couple I bought were too small after that, despite m&s measuring me for that purpose. And not melting the pump might have helped!!!

It does work. But means you have to go out and buy them. Also they don't last very long in the bra.

Breast pads, lansinoh and nursing.bras are essential, everything else isnt. See how you get on and you can get a pump

I was lucky never needed nipple cream and only a few pads at first. We got a hand pump that was about £20 but I thought was rubbish, then tried a electric one which was about £90 which was a bit better but takes soo long so just gave up and just nursed. Then the steriliser I think was like £50. Though didn't get any of it til after 6 weeks when bf is well established. Xx
