Hello ladies,

Was just wondering what your views on cot bumpers are.. Ive heard they can be dangerous as baby could overheat or something? Cant decide whether to buy some or not?

 I didnt have one with DS cant remember why.

I have decided to make one for this LO as she wont be getting her own room for a year (until we have renovated the attic room for DS so she can be on the same floor of the house as me) so Im tinking the cot will be the only place that is her surroundings IYKWIM.

My feelings are that the bumper will be at the head of the cot and she will be placed at the foot so it will be nowhere near, and they need to come off when they are mobile enough to grab it so it will only be used for a few months. personally I wouldnt buy an expensive one for that reason

I had one for making the cot look nice while they werent in it! Then when they moved into the cot, they were taken off!
The thing is they usually come with quilts! You dont use the quilt until 12 months but you can use the bumper then as its dangerous for all sorts of reasons like using it to climb on etc so my advice is, if you want one to make the room look nice like a nursery set to match the room etc then get one, if not then I wouldnt bother! :D

I wouldn't bother.

Its only there for window dressing so to speak. Can't use them past a certain age as babies can move around and therefore they are dangerous, using them beforehand to me seems pointless as they only get a few months use *if* you leave them in there when LO is sleeping. Which I don't like to do for air flow etc. Prefer just the cot and also as its easier then to see LO from the bed. Rather than having to move or stand up and peek over.

Another one of those items for baby that really are there just to make us spend money because it looks nice. I'd rather spend my money on things I actually need for my LO.

End of the day its what you like and feel comfortable using.

Ours came with the room set and it's never been used, the HV told me to never use one because of the cot death risk and now if I put it in he would just climb it and chew it! I'm glad I didn't waste money buying it seperately!!

We were told at our antenatal classes not to have them as they affect the air flow around the cot.

I nearly got one the day before too! Haven't needed it though, and glad I didn't waste the money!

i used them with both my dd's and never had a problem, it stoped any draft getting to their head, and when they are tiny babies they cant move about, we just made sure her head wasnt right at the top, and the cot is open at the top and the end so i cant see how air flow would be such a problem :? when they got older and started rolling about in the cot it stoped them banging their head off the cot, once the baby can move its head its very unlikely that the cot bumper will do any damage, so personally i will be using one this time, not for decoration but for the reasons above :)

Asher loves his! He's always snuggled up against it in the morning. I put him to sleep in a grobag, he never has any blankets, so that's why he's not at the bottom of the bed.

The advice is not to use them once your baby can sit up unaided, as they have ties on them they can cause harm to baby.

I never used one with my first baby. A friend has given me one this time but I'm using it to dress the cot. Once baby is in there at about 5/6 months I'll be taking it off for safety reasons. He/she will be in the moses basket to start off with.

My friend used it without any problems though saying that. I can see their uses for protectin LO's heads from banging against the cot, which ours did all the time but the safety aspect was always in my mind so preferred not to use one.

i think it depends on whether ur gunna actually use it and whether u feel comfortable.
I really hate wooden cots as my son got his leg n arm stuck in one when he was little so i always had a travel cot with a proper fitted mattress in.
They are so much easier to move about if need be and they can be used for years for different reasons xxxx

although, there's no way my baby can untie knots and he's 9 months old and still has his bumper! Has been sitting up unaided for months!

xx
