I've just come across this during my evening baby Googling.

Basically, you can donate your placenta/cord blood after you've given birth. The stem cells in it could then go on to help save someone's life.

It looks so simple, can't believe I've never heard of it before. I'm doing my birth plan on Friday so will see if its something I can add in.

I was just wondering if anyone else has done this before or is planning on doing it this time round?

Oh I didn't know about this ~ will look into it ~ thanks for sharing! I do intend to do delayed cord clamping this time to get all the benefits for baby x

I would love to do this but it isn't offered at my hospital. My friend is in Manchester and was able to do it. Such a worthy cause.

This is only offered at some hospitals but worth investigating

If your interested in this also have a read up on private stem cell storage - very interesting :)

Also delayed cord clamping is not an 'option' it's standard procedure now unless of an emergency :)

We are doing this privet - paying to keep and store the cord blood for our baby for 25 years (hope this perio can be extended in years to come) x

We wished we would have had the money to do it! very useful and the stem cells are invaluable :)

I think you can donate the the Antony Nolan trust. I really would have done this had I have known. And I had my baby 2 week ago and I was still given a option to the delayed clamping. I didn't really know what benefits it had. And I was in full blown labour when I was asked so just said yeah lol x

We got a good offer from BioVault - 0% finance, so works out at £70 for 18 months + 150 for sending the collection kit. We would never be able to pay it up front otherwise...

Oooo I really hope my hospital offers it, I will be checking with my midwife tomorrow.

I'm not sure I could justify the cost of private, although I understand why you would do it, they could be invaluable.

I was also reading about delayed clamping and natural or assisted delivery of the placenta last night. Didn't kno anything about this before, I suddenly have lots of questions!!!

I couldn't have afforded the 70 a month in finance because of being a main earner on SMP - maternity leave kills is :(

Yep I opted for the injection - many do - far easier and quicker but it's something very individual :)

This is something we really want to do! There are just so many companies offering the service - I need to do some proper research into which one to go with - obviously it's a 25 year + investment - We want one with some kind of insurance involved so if they go bankrupt the sample will be safely stored elsewhere. KHTW did you go for blood or blood+tissue?
Xxx

Summer, I went for blood cord only x

I think you need to decide soon, you are nearly at the end of pregnancy and I think they have time frame limitations x

Well, my hospital doesn't do it - looks like its just a few down London way. If anyone wants information on it here's the link http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/blood-donation/pages/cordblooddonation.aspx.

The midwife also advised if we wanted to do it privately, then the maternity ward won't take any responsibility for collecting the cells. As things are so hectic after birth they can't guarantee it and apparently someone tried to sue when the cells weren't collected! So, those looking into doing it privately may want to consider what kind of support the company gives for collecting the sample.

I'm the same mummybexee, OH is a student so the only income we will have for the next nine months is SMP!

The midwife has just been and I've decide to go natural unless its recommended that I have the injection. Apparently this is my whole approach to labour, I'll give it a go as natural as possible but I want access to the drugs!

That really depends on the Hospital / Maternity Ward. I spoke to mine and they are fine with taking the sample x

Just don't know if I'd trust the midwifes to take such an important sample! Mine failed to open a cannula :/ when I'm paying that amount of want someone there to collect! Imagine if the sample you froze for 25 years was no good :/

Oh gosh! I hope they can manage...
The risk with involving a privet person is that if they have to travel far they may not make it in time... that's what my company warned me about.

Besides they test the sample before freezing it so (God forbid) should it be bad they won't charge you but you will end up with no stem cells for your baby :(

Either way, there is always some risk involved...

Oh that's ok! Has your finance agreement all been sorted then? As long as that's in the T+Cs because I'd imagine a lot of places wouldn't have that written in. :/

They are pretty good - you don't sign an agreement and pay until the sample is positively tested which is the only fair way to go about it, really. All they did so far was put us through credit check and send us the collection kit for which we had to pay up front.

Been doing some research today. KHTW- who did you have to speak to at your hospital to get permission/agree to take the sample after birth?
