Congestion while having milk and advice on cow milk allergy

Hi All,

Hope you all are fine. I changed formula of my lil one from Aptamil to Cow and gate since he was having constipation..I have recently noticed every time i feed him milk his nose gets congested and now when he sleeps he makes a whistling noise.. I suspect its the milk causing congestion..this milk did help him get rid of constipation earlier but now he is again constipated.. the HV told me to check with doctor if he is allergic to cows milk..both me and my husband never had this allergy so I am unsure..can any one of u explain me symptoms of cows milk allergy plz ..

Don't know much about milk allergy but was the aptimil milk based too? If so switching wouldn't cause an allergy? Maybe LO has a cold which just conincided with the formula change? How is it going today?

His nose is still blocked.. and the same whistling sound is coming from his nose..I am using the spray so not sure what else to do..any ideas..

My son is allergic to cows milk protein, well thats what the doctors think anyway!
We spent quite a bit of time with him in hospital in his first few weeks after I discovered blood and stringy mucus in his nappies, he also projectile vomited all over my OH lol!
From my understanding the symptoms are, stringy bloody mucus poop, bad skin especially on the face, my son had cradle cap, (I've also read this could be linked) general grumpyness, reflux and I believe colds are also common. But no lo is the same.
My lo has been put on a prescription formula which seems to have cleared his nappies up. We won't know for sure if he is allergic until we start weening at about 4 months. Non of our family have any allergies either so we don't know much either, it's just trial and error!

Sorry not much help but maybe you could try some of the formula on prescription if your hv or doc is willing to prescribe to try!

You could try aptamil comfort, the milk protein is more broken down in it and it helps with constipation. My LO was on this before the dietician prescribed a formula that was milk free. The comfort milk was so much better than normal formula for zach. His symptoms were that he was constipated, generally unsettled nearly all the time and screamed when I tried to feed him. I haven't heard of congestion being a symptom before but I am no expert. You can get a calpol plug in thing with Vicks in it to help congestion.

Thanks Zazu and D Ball. I will try him the comfort milk as well..I did look at calpol plug but that can only be used with 3+ babies so will have to wait for a little time more..

Dball - which is the prescription milk the doctor advised you on.

Hey hun, J has a cows milk allergy. When he was on c&g he would wake up in the morning and cry cos he was hungry then we would feed him and he would scream for hours (not cry but an ear splitting pained scream)then his cry would change to hunger.it made him stop breathing cos his stomach swelled up and it pushed against his lungs. Also he had horrendous diaarhoea. Literally it was like water and would be all over his hair and feet. you couldnt pick him up to change him as it would get all over your hands and then you would struggle to clean your hands etc....

He got put on nutramigen 1 formula which worked a treat and hes still on it now. We got told that we should try him on reg milk at 3months and we did and same thing dhappened. My younger brother had a cma so he probably got the gene from me!

H is on pregestimil. He's been fine on it, not really looking forward to weaning and reintroducing cmp just hoping it's not that bad and he's possibly grown out if it. No one in our family has it so no idea where it's come from.

Thanks Davina and Squeakz. I have booked an appointment with the paed. on monday to get him examined for milk allergy..till then will hope he stays fine on comfort milk ..

Hi D_Ball..visit to the paed was helpful..he did not suspect cow milk allergy and has told me to stick to cow and gate..he is saying congestion is common until babies r 4 -5 months old bcz of mucus. Has recommended prune juice for constipation twice a day and he will see us again in 6 weeks..I have given prune juice and it has helped him cleared his bowels once in two days so will keep giving him..hoping he stays fine..thanks for askin

Thanks Squeakz and ya he also suggested me to buy a humidifier for clearing up his nose. He mentioned that central heating might be a reason for him being stuffed up..I am now looking for good humidifier.does anyone know which humidifiers are good..
