condolences cards

As some of you may or may not know, my dear Grandad passed away on tuesday

Ive never really known anybody to pass away until now so this may sound like a really stupid question but do i send my nan a condolences card? also my mum wants to send one too (she is devorced from the family, my dads side) but does she send one now (less than a week after he passed away) or nearer to the funeral?

Sorry to sound stupid but i just dont want to look silly or uncaring at a time like this.
