Hi all,

For those whose baby have a mill protein allergy, what did you give for breakfast?
Also, have you found any dairy free yogurts that are ok for baby? Xx

Hi Hun

You can use almond milk or oat milk in normal porridge and then I blend it and add fruit or cinnamon to make it different, also wheetabix with oat or almond milk? I also use soya yoghurts, the dietician said they were fine and I blend it with blueberries and avocado to thicken it and make it more substantial, plus avocado so good for you! Have you tried scrambled egg? That's all I have achieved for breakfast without cows milk so far! X hope you and Sophie are well xx does she have CMPA ?

We use Koko milk with cooking - so use this in french toast, scrambled eggs, porridge, oatabix, pancakes....

For breakfast usually keep it to oatabix or oats with fruit or toast with a DF spread.

We also have egg soliders, boiled eggs/egg in a cup.. We actually pretty much have everything. I think at first it throws you a bit. If she cant yet manage finger foods you could blend or mash some things.

http://cowsmilkproteinallergysupport.webs.com/weaning

https://www.godairyfree.org/dairy-substitutes

That site is quite useful, and the other one I frequently use is CMPA support for weaning on fb which people post screeds and screeds to on DF weaning for the earlier ages right up.

And Ive posted another subs link for things.

For yohurts we use Koko again. Its my fave product over soya - and Carters. You can get a huge Koko plain yoghurt for mixing fruit through and blending etc or you can get the strawberry or lemon DF koko yog pots.

Not too clued up on the soya products as Carter had a type 1 allergy we decided to avoid soya just incase, although he does have the soya growing up milk strawberry on occasion and is fine - he gets that when Jackson gets a strawberry yazzoo.. Like to keep em equal LOL.

xxxx

That's been so useful for me too, thank you Hun! Hope you are well x I am on the fb group and it's great xx

Aw yes hello I didn't recognise your pic as it was a scan then a baby look how big she is now!!

Yeah the fb page is been a god send I was totally clueless and had to learn quick with his being ige allergy. Obviously for the first while it's easy just give DF milk but then your like oh shit milk is in like everything? I think once you get it into your routine it just comes normal I remember reading every label and now I have a good idea what will have dairy or prob because I buy substitutes for the things we use most so never need to bother. I used to avoid may contains but he's actually fine with this and has actually had some dairy and was fine so we are somewhere on the milk ladder.

His wee face has broke out and I can't shift it and he's been totally DF so I may need to get some steroid cream for that then formally start the ladder because I can't just keep gussing but things aren't as bad as when he was tiny thankfully.

Having a 4 yr old who leaves things containing dairy lying around is a good test lol so far he's had a hold of milk shake yoghurt and chocolate albeit tiny.

They'll be munching on milky bars before we know it lol. Hope your well too.

xxxx

Thanks so much both of you xx
Yes she has CMPA :( she is breastfed so it's ok in that respect but for weaning it is a minefield, it does seem that everything has milk in it!
Thanks for the links RM and I will look for that Facebook group too.

I am using aptimil pepti at the moment in her porridge (organix) and she is fine with that. Am I best changing to an almond milk? Are there different benefits to it?
Do you blend the weetabix? I don't think oatibix would need to be blended would it? So many questions xx

Ah last I read you were looking into trying pepti. How is she managing on that then?

If its pre 6m Id use her milk, only because itll have a bit more nutrients in it and always good to get as much formula as you can. (in line with WHICH and dept of health CMPA babies can stay on formula until 2 years old because the alternate milk has less nutrients/fats than the formula) but of course it all depends on how they are eating solids and weighing. Like Carter was 26lb at 1 year weight so we probably wont be on formula until 2 but he is still on it because he still wants his bottles but just with cooking I use the Koko because we only get tiny neocate tins and just really to improve taste and because it has certain pro biotics in it Ive never been clear on the heating plus it isnt as smooth as alternate milk for cooking... Its really up to you. If shes a chunky monkey and thriving then could try her with an alternate milk. Its only now at 1 we are giving him the Koko in a 360 cup and hoping we can get off the bottles and formula that way.

You don't need to blend the oatabix or weatabix, just in case she didn't manage it. Carter never needed it blended but Jackson really used to gag on alot LOL.

I dont know too much about the other milks - I know in terms of nutrition the soya growing up has best contents then Oatley then Koko - the only reason we use Koko is because we avoided soya and then found his Neocate is made with coconut extracts and a similar consistency so we just stuck to that. Doesn't need to be Koko either, Asda or Sainsburys brand is fine too.

I would maybe buy an own brand one until you are sure she likes it and are cooking with it. Although they last longer I find if its just being used for cooking it can go to waste, but if your using it alot in stuff and giving her wee sips or whatever in between then just get whatever, just wouldn't want you to spend a fortune buying it in then she doesn't like that one or something.

xxxx

Thanks so much RM. She is fine with the pepti, she only has it in porridge as won't take a bottle.
I will have a look at the own brand stuff as won't be using it alot to start with. Will also buy some oatibix xx

I do use almond or coconut milk in porridge because I can't express and she won't take neocate or even soya formula in a bottle or in porridge!! The dietician said it was fine in cooking but doesn't provide nutrients so I just breastfeed her before or after to make sure she gets her milk too, I mainly just give it to add fruit to and get her used to the breakfast routine. I put pear in it this am cooked it altogether we had some and I bled des her some and she loved it! Weaning is a minefield dairy free!! I cook beef and chicken casseroles in the slow cooker and then take some out blend it and freeze it for her.
The other advantage to alternative milk is that you can use normal porridge oats but again less nutrition but I am told it's stil about milk at this point and it's just introducing taste and texture.

RM the constant guessing is exhausting!

I miss cheese so much!!
Leora didn't tolerate pepti 1 :(

I think she reacts to other things but trying to work out what is a nightmare!
She also wakes up every 2 hours for feeding! I know it's just comfort feeding but quickest way I can get her back to sleep! I am shattered!

Lou, Sophie wakes every 2 hours too! It's for comfort and she wants to be in the bed. Tiring. I try to settle her without feeding every single time but it's quicker to feed and actually get some sleep.

I joined that group on fb but have had to restrict the posts as was making me too anxious, too many allergies and pictures of reactions etc.

Lou, do you not have dairy yourself either? I haven't stopped dairy as she doesn't react to it, I would have struggled without coffee, that's the only dairy I'd miss.

So far I am giving her jar foods as just don't know what to cook up, I guess she can have what we have but blended (providing it doesn't have milk of course) xx

Hi Hun

Yes I am dairy free! It made a big difference with her, been dairy free for 4 months now!! Tim is gluten free so it's a bit of a nightmare at times! We co sleep, I can't cope otherwise, sometimes she feeds every hour and a half and is really unsettled inbetween. I feed her back to sleep currently but I know I need to address this I just don't feel strong enough at the moment. Lack of sleep caught up with me I think.

Leora won't take formula and through trying it now won't take a bottle! Even with expressed milk in it!

We have moved the cot into our room and will try getting her to sleep in it soon! On a night we can get her down in it but she wakes up 30 mins later!!

It is tiring! I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed by it all to be honest!

Xx

We pretty much co-sleep too. I feed her to sleep and she goes in cot for a few hours and then she wants to be in the bed. I can sometimes get her back in to cot for an hour or two but it's a battle. I think we just need to do whatever we need to do in order to sleep and function. The amount of people that I speak to at baby groups that are you g through the same thing is unreal.

Sophie won't take a bottle either, she only took it once or twice at a couple of weeks old and that's it, she doesn't seem to suck it properly.

I feel a bit overwhelmed with the allergy stuff too as I am terrified of there being more than dairy, I really hope she grows out of it. Her reaction is not too bad, she gets a red face for a couple of hours and is sick but it lasts a few hours and it's over with, on the fb page., some were saying the reaction lasted weeks. Was making me too nervous xx

It depends on the type of allergy she had. So basically Carters is type 1 IGE - so that means instant reaction and usually (depending on amount of dairy) isnt that bad after immediate symptoms of face rash swelling, runny nappies, wind and sickness. A non IGE tends to be delayed so maybe last a bit longer.

I think at first it is alot to get your head around, but like I say now it is just part of our routine. We had to be super vigilant because the type of allergy he was diagnosed with means he could be anaphylactic. If you are using pouches then I just stuck to the blended fruit/veg.

I thought he was allergic to wheat for a while but actually it was a may contain dairy he was reacting to, I had just got myself so overwhelmed about it all I panicked.

Yeah 1 year old. I cant quite believe it either. He is saying a lot of wee random words now, how did it happen even faster this time

I am not sure on the breast milk - but I know any of the formulas that are hydrolyzed tends to be baby will eat more frequent. (not sure if its same effect if dairy is cut from BM, not sure if it digests quicker).

Carter used to be every 2-3 hour for about 4-5m.. Then he started going a wee bit longer and now he sleeps 12/13 hour and has 3ish feeds per day, morning noon night.. He eats like mad now though. It is really just about finding your feet.

We don't have any allergy history so I guess I was always very confident that he would outgrow it. We were sent for testing at 1 which came back mildly raised for an IGE so, we were given go ahead to commence the milk ladder. There was a time I genuinely didn't think we would get by our issues, or didn't see him outgrowing this either but there is always light. You will eventually meet with a dietitian (or should) anyone who is moved onto a specialist milk must then get a referral to dietitian for further support when weaning and eventually for reintroduction to dairy. It was dietitian who sent us to an allergist consultant for testing when I showed them his pictures, and symptoms. They wanted testing to make sure it wasnt really severe before attempting milk ladder at 1.

Sleeping we had to use white noise, through the night. By 6m he was in with his brother and had the wee vtech bear that plays the white noise. I still use white noise to sleep now.

xxxxx

Sophies reaction is instant. All over with in an hour or two, does that mean she could be anaphylactic too? That's scary :(

We don't have allergy history either, my dad had a wheat intolerance for a while but that's it xx

I'd say that's possibly an ige. Any facial rash immediately after feeding could indicate ige which in its most severe reaction can be ana. I've not known alot of ana to milk but it does happen. Has your gp referred you on? Alot of the time they just give the milk and leave you to it. My friend started on pepti and fought for neocate and then had to ask her dermatologist to refer him. As soon as my gp gave me the pepti she saI'd I'd hear from dietitian. I guess with costing they like to make sure your on the appropriate milk. She implied I'd be taken off of neocate due to cost. 'If he's found not to need that one he might just end up back on normal milk'. I was terrified they'd take it off us and I told them and showed them pics and stuff and said how he settled instantly on the neocate and they weren't fussed.

Is she still having facial rashes with the pepti? If she's settled on that it contains milk proteins just broken down so if she isn't reacting to that it's good. We didn't settle at all even on nutramigen he broke out when feeding.

Does she get a rash on contact? Usually that's an indication too like if any touches her and she rashes up that usually ige.

For his testing they pricked him and put a dairy solution on him and watched and then took a tracer of the reaction. His was only just classed as positive for immediate but that was when he was 7m. So maybe already started out growing it by then?

Try not to worry too much too soon if she's good on the pepti just stick to purely non dairy. Carter was classed as ige and still tolerated may contains but if you feel safer just stick to purely non dairy until you get to speak to a dietitian.

She said to try some milk again in 6 weeks to see how she goes and that she will refer us on. She was very good. Her son had the same so she was very helpful.

She is fine on the pepti, no reaction at all. She has had little red marks where she has had contact with milk but not the full rash.

I have used a couple of 'may contain milk' things and she has been ok. I am going to have to find some more dairy free things for Her though, what yogurt did you find the nicest? Xx

Ah that is good then. It sounds like she'll do fine. And you have the support in place for guidance.

Always Koko here. His milk is coconut based so seemed the right thing lol. The koko pots are lemon or strawberry. They are quite big mind you so I'd use half starting and tub the rest in a wee tub for next day. Quite often do deals on them in asda. Come in pack of 4. Then you can get the big plain koko which is like vanilla or whatever you can give with blended or fine chopped fruit or whatever. Or use for dipping.

You can get alpro ones n stuff but never ever used them only alpro thing he likes is the strawberry milk cartons but even they are a bit big for him just now. The soya is much thicker than the coconut milk. Jackson quite often has milkshake and seen them one day for carter but dont regularly use them as he wasnt finishing one. xxx

Hi my daughter grew out of her allergy about 1yr and was on nutramigen formula. They have a great website and Facebook page which gives loads of recipe ideas for different meals. This helped me loads as I found weaning really scary as I couldn't do what all my friends were doing. I also got her referred to see a specialist at the hospital about diet and she was wonderfully helpful. Your health visitor can refer you if your gp hadn't. I had to go carefully with soya products to begin with as some children can react to this but my dd was fine. There is a alpro milk made for young children which was recommended, it's higher in sugar than dairy but they need the calcium and specialist said not to worry at this age. My dd also liked the soya yogurts too. Good luck x

Thanks Aimee, she has had soya and been fine so far, the doctor did say some react but to try. It's very scary. I just hope she grows out if it too xx
