Baby was due on 30th August and my husband is working in Dubai and can only take 2 weeks off work so we had decided it was most likely she would be late so he had booked his flight for 5th September, but baby had other ideas...
Saturday afternoon I started losing my plug and a bit of browny discharge but I didn't think much of it. I started getting mild period pains in the evening but I slept well and I told my husband not to worry because I really didn't feel like anything would happen.
On Sunday I lost a bit more plug and in the afternoon I had a few more period pains but I still didn't feel like anything would happen. I had a student midwife looking after me so I text her to let her know what was happening and she called me just to ask me if my waters had gone but I was pretty sure they hadn't gone and I still was sure that nothing was going to happen.
On Monday at about 2am the period pains had got a bit worse so I decided to time them. They were coming in clusters of 3 for about 30 seconds 3 mins apart. I couldn't see any pattern though and didn't think the pain was bad enough but I couldn't go back to sleep. My mum came and saw me about 4am because I kept going to the bathroom. She said she thought something was happening so I skyped my husband to see what he wanted to do. I told him I thought she might be on her way but I wasn't sure and I thought it might be a false alarm. At this point I had a contraction and he straight away said he was coming back! So he quickly packed and went to the airport.
From then on the pain got worse but I still didn't think they were bad enough but I phoned my midwife just to make her aware.
I put my TENS on about 6am and then the pains started getting worse and really close together. So I phoned the birthing unit and they told me to go in at 9.
By the time I got there my contractions were much more painful and coming really close together. I tried to time them but I was concentrating too much on pressing the button for the TENS and then breathing through them.
I got to the birthing unit and had to wait a bit for the senior midwife to arrive to assess me. At this point I really thought they were going to tell me I wasn't really in labour and I should go home.
The midwife arrived at about 9.45 and assessed me. She said "Sarah! You're about 6 cm!" I was so shocked! She then said she thought my waters might had gone because she couldn't feel the membrane. She then gave me gas and air which was the best thing ever but I still kept my TENS on. I called my best friend and asked her to come and be my second birthing partner (my mum was already there) because my husband was now already on the plane and he wouldn't land until 15.30 and it would take him a couple of hours to get to me so I thought it was best to have her there until he could get there.
The next few hours are all a blur but I just kept taking the gas and air and in between contractions I tried to rest and focus on the positive things to come. I kept telling myself I could do it. The one thing I do remember was being really hot and my mum and friend kept patting me with cold flannels which was really nice. A couple of times I started pushing when I was having contractions but the midwives planned to assess me again after 2pm so I was still thinking I was a long way from actually giving birth. I also thought that it wasn't hurting enough so I was convinced I would still be there for hours and hours.
At about 2pm I suddenly decided I wanted to go in the pool for a bit but at first they ignored me because I was adamant I didn't want a water birth because I hate baths and I hate swimming! But when I repeated my request they started filling the birthing pool for me. Whilst the pool was filling the midwife assessed me and I was done! Completely dilated! I couldn't believe it.
So I got in the pool about 2.20 and got onto my hands and knees. I remember hearing them say, "we'll give her an hour in the pool" and I thought to myself - an hour! No way, I'm doing this now and I got on my hands and knees and started pushing. I just did exactly what they told me to do - push as much as I could into my bottom for as long as I could. I did this several times and I could feel her coming. I just kept doing exactly everything they said and tried my hardest. I put all my energy into pushing and kept telling myself I could do it and it would all be over very soon. When the head popped out it hurt a lot but it was kind of a relief too. A few more pushes and she was out! Arriving at 2.40 - after a whole 10 minutes of pushing.
I had a 2nd degree tear all inside which had to be stitched and that was probably worse than the whole labour and birth! We never did find out what happened to my waters!
Cecilia weighed 7lb 9oz.
Her daddy finally got to meet her at about 6.30pm and we went home at about 10pm that night.
I am so proud of myself. I always said that I could do it with no drugs and I did!
I'm having problems getting her to latch on so I am having to pump and bottle feed her but hopefully I will be able to get this sorted soon but in conclusion, apart from the feeding issue and daddy not getting there in time, I had an amazing birth and I am so happy with how it all went.
