Hi everyone,

is there anyone making something for work (for when the baby is born). My husband has a lot of people working at his work and we don't have a lot of money so I am making my own cakes so he can give them at work for when the baby is born.

(Don't know if that is a typical dutch tradition, as we live in the Netherlands) but I just made some red velvet cupcakes and will put them in the freezer until needed. I will also make the frosting and put that in the fridge. (I am now 39 weeks so they will be very fresh when he brings them to work).

I made them without artificial colouring which means they turned out les bright red but more bright pink/phusia colour which is actually kind of nice since we are gettin a girl. woohoo.

Then we can defrost them the day before he goes back to work and he or I (depending on my state hehe) can put on the frosting and he will bring some white/pink sprinkles too :D and put them on the cakes at work.

That's a lovely thing to do. I haven't heard of anyone making things for work but think they sound fab xx

It's funny how different places/people have different traditions!

The only tradition I am expecting is a bunch of flowers sent to me from work! lol

I don't doubt my hubby will have a few pints one lunch time with his colleagues when he returns to work after paternity leave - but again, it'll be them buying him drinks not the other way round!

Lovely idea with the cakes though, they sound delicious :)

thank you so much ladies :) I will post some pictures when they are finished (nice to see the results right)? I have made a few extra so we can try them out and I will photographs those \0/

too bad they don't do that in the UK. I love the idea of bringing something to work to celebrate with colleagues (but I don't like the idea of buying ready made cake for 70 people). Now I made the cakes and it has costs me (excluding the frosting I still need to make) about 5 pounds or so (and a whole evening of busy in the kitchen but that's not too bad right)?

Ooh, I just read this thread while eating a homemade red velvet cupcake! I think it's a sign I should eat another.

That's really cheap Helen! :)

yes they are. Ofcourse the frosting will be more expensive because that is a mixture of creamcheese and mascarpone (but you won't need loads because that is sooooooooo heavy). I am guessing maybe a total of maximum 12-15 pounds will do the job (including the sprinkles). and that makes it totally worth it.

I think if you buy homemade cupcakes or in a special store they are not expensive because of the ingredients but just because they are quite time consuming to make but if you love baking it is very satisfying IMO.
