i had a really long and scary labour last time which ended in an emergency section, im booking myself in for one this time as im quite small and im not built for squeezing out babies lol.. just wondering if any of u know how many wks they do an elective section at.. i wont find out until im 35 wks but wud like some kind of idea...

i think it is around 37 ish weeks, they want it to be late enough the be OK, but early enough that you haven't already gone into labour.

I'm glad you brought this up, I had a section last time due to an undiagnosed double breech. I'd love to have a natural birth this time, but due to my experience last time i'm scared they could get it wrong again. To cut a long story short, I went to my midwife the day before I went into labour and said I believed my baby had turned to the breech position, she basically thought I was being dramatic, 24 hours later Rebekah was born by emergeny section as she was breech  I was right, the midwife was wrong...

ANYWAY, I thought if I opted for a scetion this time they might give me a date at my 20 week scan on Friday when I see my consultant? Did they give you any indication at all at your last appointment. The midwife at my 12 weeks scan said it is normally only 10 days before for an elective section. Making my due date the 15th August.

I think it's around 38-39 weeks when they do an elective. You'll find out your date at your 35 week consultant appointment but I'm pretty sure they leave it as late as possible without you going into labour.

Hi

When they decide to do an emergency c.section do they knock you out with General anesthetic? I'm small 4ft 11ins and have wonky pelvis and curved spine and they said until I go into labour they won't know whether I'll need a c.section (its my 1st baby). They aren't sure if I can have an epidural cos of my spine. Seeing an anthetist in May re epidural.

I had a general anesthetic as they didn't have time to give me an epidural. I literally went to the hospital, had an internal , felt feet and was taken straight to theatre. Most people will have a section with only an epidural. They may give you a general anesthetic though based on your spine problem. xxx

I think they prefer to wait until you're 38 weeks. At least, that's what my consultant said. In the end, Tom was delivered at 37 weeks but that was only because I had the beginnings of pre-eclampsia. x

Thanks. How long were you knocked out for? I so want to be awake when LO pops out.

Hi, im in the same situation as you and feel at the moment i want a section. When i spoke to the consultant at my 20 week scan they said most are 39 weeks and not before! She also said they encourage you to go full term. I said bugger that if im having a secttion i want the perk of being a teeny bit early as went well over with my 1st.x

This is the only thing about a GA, I got knocked out and then woke up very drowsy over an hour later, possibly more. I was drifting in and out of sleep as well as she was born at 4 o'clock in the morning and I didn't get to the ward until 7 o'clock. It was a strange feeling as she could have been anyone's child really as I was asleep when she was born, but luckily we still bonded as soon as I held her. I remember waking up and listening to 2 nurses talking about something, but I was so drowsy it took me ages to ask them what i'd actually had! Rebekah was asleep in the corner. They took her out to my mum and sister to hold when she was born as no-one is allowed in the theatre when you have a GA. It was weird thinking I never held or saw her for an hour after she was born as I was dosed up! But I never had a problem bonding and neither did Rebekah, even though they encourage immediate skin to skin contact xx

i had my 29 week scan the other day and i have to wait until my next scan which is 35 weeks to discuss getting the section and then i will prob get a date, its because i need to speak to a doctor and it was midwives doing the 29 week scan, at 35 weeks i will meet the consultant, was such a bad labour last time so if this section is planned it can be enjoyable..

in my hospital they dont knock u out, ur awake the whole time, u either get a spinal tap or an epidural, its pretty strange but good, u can feel everything but not the pain obviously lol.. can feel them cutting into u and then tugging the baby out, its mad!

Hi there,

I saw my consultant at 14 weeks we asked the same thing she said that 39 weeks is the best time for c-section, but will do earlier if the circumstances dictate.

I am being seen again at 23, 28 and 32 with the possibiltie of 34 weeks depending on how big this baby will be.. i have been told the only reason they are offering me a c-section is that my son had shoulder dystocia (sorry about spelling) and they worried that if i go normal delivery this would most probably happen again.

I am terrified at the prospect of having a c-section but did have an epidural with my son are they similar? That most probably is a thick question to ask!

Take care all

I know a friend of mine had an elective section and she said it was really nice compared to her first emergency one. She said they played music in the theatre and were chatting away the whole time. She also said her recovery was alot faster.
