Breastfeeding Support Thread

I thought about a medula pump but like I mentioned above I seem to be "overproducing" any way so wouldn't really use it that much and can express about an 1oz in less then 5 minutes just with a manual so god knows how much I would get with an electric.

also does anyone use the lilypadz reusable breastpads I've seem the silicon ones and aparently the stop you from leaking all together, and I thought they might help me get a more "normal milk supplie" as is if I don't leak my body won't try to replace the milk I'm losing in leakage if you get what I mean.

haven't used them personally but my friend did and she swore by them. I will use them next time :D

Hhave just read your other message lol. Wow Lily sounds like she is doing great, fab weight gain and fab sleeping :cheer: I never had the problem of too much milk earlier on but I get it sometimes now and Seren really struggles and will often pull off and cough. Poor baby. I did however get a painful let down, like really strong pins and needles so I sympathise

Ouch, ouch , ouch!! Olivia bites me at every feed ! It's so painful yet everything I try to deter her from doing it doesn't appear to be working :(

Has anyone got any ideas? I don't want to stop bf'g but its really painful so I might have to :(

Lucy

Does she do it at the end of a feed?

A way to get her to release your boob is to smother her into your chest for a second, sounds mean but it's only for a second and it works. Ella did it a couple of times and hasn't done it since I did that.

Hi Kina

She sometimes bites at the end of the feed but mostly it's at the beginning! She seems to want to bite then settle into the suckling, sometimes I bring her face inwards to get her to release and other times I yelp because it's just so sore. I was thinking maybe it's another sign she's ready for solids? That she wants to bite everything?! I think tomorrow I'm going to really try and space her feeds out more so that she's really hungry and hopefully wont bother with nibbling first!

Lucy

Ouch hon! No tips for helping just wanted to say that I sympathise! Hopefully when you introduce solids it will stop her from doing it

Kina - I think you're right! yesterday and today I haven't been bitten which coincided with Olivia having solids!

I wonder if it was that or all my yelping I was doing? Either that or her jaws were worn on that banana!

a very relieved, Lucy !

Really pleased for you  Plus it sounds from you other post that she's doing great on the solids

yay :cheer: :cheer:

I did one of these and its great. There isn't really anyhting you have to do as they give you all the info but I read around. Is it the La Leche one?

Hi girls
Sorry this might be a long one.
I took lily to be weighed last thursday and the health visitor told me that she only weighs 9lb 5oz and has dropped down to the 9th centile she'd previously been growing at a weight between the 9th n 25th.
The concern is that since she was born she's been quite sick after feeds (suspected reflux) but because her weight was fine it wasn't considered a problem until now, although this week she has been having smaller and more frequent and no sickiness.
I don't really think that the drop to the 9th centil is really to big as I know that breastfed babies gain weight differently the bottle fed babies, but I can't find a chart for breastfed babies to compare it with, and I can't see how her weight gain can be bad when she's having a dirty and wet nappy at every change after a feed.
Anyway the HV coming back round tomorrow and I'm trying to get as much info and support about it as possible so what are your guys thourght and does anyone know where I can find a growth chart online to look at.
sorry again for it being so long

SUz here are the growth charts from Kellymom http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/gr ... harts.html (Sonia posted this link in general topics) hopefully it will be of use to you :)

Don't be bullied by them hon  BF do put on weight slower and it seems that a lot of bf mums are made to feel bad about this. As you've already said she's got wet and pooey nappies and as long as she seems alert then she's doing great hon (you both are!) I know some women whose babies have dropped off the 'formula' charts, so don't feel too disheartened

Good luck with the HV tomorrow

Thanks Kina

I'm really lucky my HV's quite good (if it wasn't for her my eldest wouldn't have got the help he needed for his understanding problem and he wouldn't be doing as well as he is at school now).

Anyway lily has gained 3 1/2 oz since last week so were pretty please with that, and HV said as long as I'm happy with her and shes gaining weight and having plenty of dirty and wet nappys then she's happy to say theres not a problem, she's coming back round on tuesday just to check again but shes not worried especially as her reflux has calmed dramatically over the last few days.

Seren fell 2 centiles and I was feeling a bit of pressure to get her weight up but eventually thiought sod it. I don't get Seren weighed often (about once in 2 months) and when I do its only to see if she needs to go up a nappy size. She is alert, giving me wet and dirty nappies and I am happy with her. xxxxxxxxxxx

That's great Suz

I have a problem

Think I may need to start introducing a little bit of aptimil but I feel really guilty about it  Ella wont feed whilst we're out (at the meet she went from her 6am feed til around 4pm without taking a proper feed) so it's not like I have the ease of breastfeeding whilst out anymore. I want to continue feeding her in the morning and before bedtime but because of her constant pulling on and off during the day (makes my nipples sore!) and the tiredness of first tri has just hit me I am not sure I can continue these feeds.

Need some advice or words of encouragement if you think I can get through this stage

Hi Kina

I know what you mean about the fidgety feeds, for the past week or so Olivia has been so distracted during feeds and often exposed my booby when I've been out. It also means that she's grumbling for food when she's in the car seat or in the pram because she hasn't taken a proper feed. I was wondering if Olivia's was because of me starting the solids, that she wasn't that hungry or perhaps that she was self weaning?

I've been thinking about it alot recently, wondering whether I will introduce some formula during the day as I really only intended to breastfeed her until I introduced solids at 6 months.

Like you though I would like to keep the morning feed and very last feed (her feed before her bed is a bottle but I usually have to settle her on the boob about an hour after putting her down).

Sorry, I know this should've been a message of "you can do it" etc, and I don't even have the exhaustion of being pg like you!

Hey hun,

Massive hug  . About 40 per cent of babies do wean themselves during pregnancy :( so what is happening is normal. I remember how sore my boobs were when I was pregnant and the thought of feeding makes me wince so I really sympathise hun. This is down to hormones and I can't think of anyhting that will help, only that it won't last forever so soon it'll feel normal again. Perhaps give her an occasional bottle when you just feel to tired or sore, this won't affect your supply as it is well established now. Remember how tough you found it when you first started breastfeeding, and with mastitis. Well you beat that so you can do this!!

On the other hand hun, if you decide to wean Ella what have you got to feel guilty about? Ella has been exclusively breastfed for 7 months, that is an amazing achievement and you should be extremely proud of yourself.

She had 4oz of aptimil last night but still had boobie, I was just so exhausted from her constant feeding yesterday.

Today we've just stuck to boob and things feel a lot more positive, but I know that I have some if I need a break :)

Hi Kina

Sounds like you've found a solution you're happy and comfortable with. DH and I are going out for lunch tomorrow and MIL is looking after Olivia so instead of wringing out my boobs in the morning I'm going to leave a bottle of formula for her (she might not need it but just incase). I feel like I'll carry on bfing for longer if I have that rest now and again and takes the pressure off me as I can't express much milk at all so I sometimes feel like I can't leave Olivia incase she needs feeding! (well that and the inlaw scenario as you know!!)
