Bottles.....

Hi ladies. My hubby and are trying to wade our way through the mine field of products. At the moment we are trying to figure out bottles and sterilisers etc. My midwife said to avoid Tommy tippy so my question is; what bottles do everyone recommend? X

My little boy loved MAM dummies but I had used Tommie Tippee bottles with him. This time Im going to use MAM ones. Im doing cold water sterlising as I still felt steam sterlising wasn't getting the bottles clean enough (ocd right?!) And I ended up doing cold water after anyway! The MAM bottles you can microwave them to sterlise them x

With my lb we had avent anti colic bottles and cold water sterilising. Like selina this just seemed cleaner (no rationale for this either!). Trying BFing again with my lb due in Dec but if needs be I’m going to try the mam anti colics as read the teat is great. Also as selina says you can sterilise in microwave with these with no need for extra equipment (you pour the water in the bottle with the teat and pop it in). Seems my weird standards don’t apply this way round! You’re right it’s a minefield so see what works best for you.

Edit to say, we started with TT bottles but didn’t find them great with reflux/colic so switched. Maybe your MW comes across a fair few people who have trouble with them?

We used lots of different ones, nuby/mam/Tommy tippee/avent but then it was only for the odd feed as I was breastfeeding and we couldn’t get her to take it at first so used loads of different types of bottles.

I used Mam bottles, dummies and microwave steriliser with my daughter. Hoping to breast feed this time but also have all the Mam stuff for back up.

I was happy with the microwave steriliser, just made sure I washed all the bits well before putting them in the steriliser, but used cold water and Milton for weekends away/holidays etc when we didn't have access to a microwave.

We went through every bottle going when dd had suspected colic (even though it ended up being a lactose intolerance) and we found the best for her having less wind was the doc brown ones but they're hard work to clean! We found tommee tippe teats were either too fast or too slow so she never got on well with them. She hated supermarket own brand ones. The mam ones were fab and if i cant breastfeed this time i would probably choose them. You can self sterilise them in the microwave if you ever needed one quick which i thought was good xx

Whatever suits your baby. We have Tommee Tippie. No trouble cleaning. Only issue we had was the no.1 teats were too slow but no.2 were too fast. We got the variflow ones and they've been great since.

We'll start breastfeeding this baby as well but when we move to bottles we'll start off with the variflow teats.

TT did not work for us, gave DD terrible gas, we swapped them to Dr Brown and I will be buying the same for 2nd baby xx

I managed to breast feed for the first 13 weeks then i switched to bottles & i used Tommee Tippee which have been excellent, They are no harder to clean than any other bottle lol, I cold water sterlise because that is what i personally prefer, Theres no right or wrong bottle to choose as your baby will let you know not all babies take to the same bottles & you may need to try a few out.

Best advice is be prepared to buy many different brands lol. With DS we started with Tommee tippee but they seemed too big. We bought him some NUK dummies as they are very slimline and they were a hit so we bought him the bottles. He liked Avent bottles too and lartterly MAM dummies (both brands were bought when I needed spares urgently and they were all I could find in Asda on holiday).

This time I have bought MAM bottles (have a look in TK MAX, they do all the brands for much cheaper) but will be attempting to breast feed as best I can).

ETA we have the tommee tippe steam steraliser but I found it took a lot of cleaning and never came up as new so moved to the milton cold water tablets x

Dont intend to offer him a soother unless absolutely necessary.

Maybe she meant the steriliser was harder to clean, that might make sense. Thank you x

We had TT. My little one has suspected reflux, but after a while I realised it was the teats. We moved onto the medium flow teats at about 6 weeks and the fast flow at 3 months and it sorted the problem. This time I’ve opted for MAM anti-colic bottles as my friend recommended them.

I've used Dr Browns with both of my boys. I did start off using Tommee Tippee with my youngest but he couldn't get on with them. He had tongue tie and couldn't open his mouth wide enough to get a good latch - a lot of babies struggle with Tommee Tippee for this reason. Dr Browns are also good for their anti colic properties. Their original design was a nightmare to clean but their current Options design is a lot less time consuming x

My midwife said to avoid Tommy tipped too, apparently they are known to leak! I went for the Philip Avent classic bottles and have never had a problem. I also cold water sterilise i just find it so much easier! xx

My Tommee Tippee bottles have never leaked !!!

I reckon they're just generally shit. Easy build up off bubbles and they don't go out very easily and for little babies it's more often than not very hard to digest that and therefore give colic/reflux symptoms..

We used mams heck after 4 years we still do... and I think they're not great either faff to clean and they very easily leak. I'd suggest dr browns. They work out a little bit more expensive but if little one ends up being prone to being colicky/refluxy then you'll want to end up with them anyway...

No they're not. We have have used them since she was 2 weeks old. They're the best bottles we have! X
