hiya all... i've got a concern with my breasts  i am really hoping to breast feed, i sucessfully breast fed my three children with no probs, well i did suffer with mastitis last time (3 yrs ago) which was really bad, hell on earth to be exact. well i am 38 wks preggo, with no sign of my milk coming in and totally normal boobs up until last night. a large swelling has appeared under my left arm pit which is sore to touch and red, if i was engorged with milk i would definately say it was a blocked duct..but as i have no sign of milk i am a bit confused  i was wondering if it's possible to get mastitis before delivery :? ..at the moment i can't even put my arm down it's really painfull..any help would be great xx

I have no idea what it could be but didn't like to read and run so have some of these
    If your really concerned and in a lot of pain phone your M/W or doctor tomorrow and get it checked out, it will put your mind at ease

Sorry m8 no clues here...

Have u tried massaging it to free up the glands...

:?

i had mastitis once, back when i was at school! must have been about 14. so, yeah it is possible. i remember that pain like it was yesterday, one of my friends hugged me and the slight touch on my chest had me in tears.

Try putting a warm flannel on the blockage for a bit and then massage the area towards the nipple. That's what the midwife recommended to clear the blockage in the breastfeeding workshop I went to, oh and book an appointment with your midwife asap

I didn't think your milk came in until a few days after birth?

If your worried about the lump you should perhaps see you GP for advice

Mine always came in weeks before with my others!

I had blocked milk ducts when I was just a girl and the lumps were just behind my nipple. They were really painful and I couldn't touch them at all. The doctor had to put a needle into my nipple to draw the milk up....... It was horrendous!!

Anyway, the point of me re-living my horror story is to say that yes it is possible to have blocked ducts (mastitis) if you haven't had a baby
