Hi, I know this is going to sound silly and tmi but I need to ask someone...

Yesterday night my milk completely ran out - he must be having a growth spurt or something - and no amount of pump expressing or him feeding was getting anything out.

Today we fed him with the bottle for the feeds he missed while I got some milk back.

Tried to feed off both sides earlier, and one had this white lump (which I'm guessing must have been a blocked duct) so I got him in a different position and its gone now - all sucked out :) I've just check the other side though as it's been agony. It's grazed from when we were trying without the nipple shields... but otherwise, one of the little nodules has gone all brown and covered over, with a white bit around it (probly dried milk). I noticed a bit of pink in my breast pad after we tried feeding from it this afternoon, and the boob was a bit sore but now it's gone brown on one of the feeding lump thingys on the nipple. I know it sounds silly but I don't know what to do about it? Has anyone else had this - think it might be a scab type thing..? I just don't want it to get infected or anything, and should I still feed off this side even if it hurts?

Sorry I'm still new to this breast feeding lark... but wanted to ask before we next feed as it's the painful one he's due to feed off next :?

Thanks guys, sorry for too much info but I needed to ask as soon as poss and not seeing midwife until Monday afternoon :? it's not serious enough to go to hospital with as I can still express off it, but I dont want to lose the supply. It's on the boob that fills up the most of the 2.

Sorry I'm not 100% sure what you were explaining ( ) but I would definately say keep feeding off both, especially with you already having one blocked duct. From what you have written I am assuming you have had cracked nipples, if so put a good cream on like lasinoh (or even wipe breat milk over the nipple as it is a fab healer) and let them air for a bit. The glamour of breastfeeding. I had an incident where this blood blister thing came out opf my nipple, 4 days after Seren was born but was told to keep feeding, otherwise you may risk your milk supply and getting mastitis.

Just wanted to say hun, that your boobs never run out of milk, they will keep producing it and you don't have to wait for them to fill back up. Its more of a supply and demand as opposed to a storage thing if you get what I mean. However it may be slower coming out so baby could be getting impatient and it might have explained why you were unable to express.

Was going to say keep feeding from both and your milk won't run out (unless there's a medical reason, which it doesn't sound like so try not to worry  ) Your breasts will feel hard, tighter and even sore as they fill but Ryan will empty them don't worry :) and also a hot shower, let the water run over your breasts and smooth your hands over them in a downward motion to help unclog any blocked ducts  very best wishes, it sounds like you're really putting in the hard work despite this :cheer:

Also wanted to add that I would mention the expressing to your HV as I thought it was a bit soon to be doing it Ryan only being a week old  I know in hospital they sometimes encourage it to make sure LO gets what he needs, but boobies do that if they are allowed to get established too, unless you have to express? Sorry, but thought I'd mention it, as I was told to express and couldn't hardly get any out as my body wasn't ready, wouldn't want anyone to feel if they don't get a few ounce out everytime they're doing something wrong

I know when i had mastiisuts i couldn't get any milk out as it made my milk supply drop...I was told stress and pain could affect my milk supply but keep feeding ..I find if i have a very hungry baby day the next day my boobs fill up more

Ypu do get lumps but best advise is to keep feeding and massage lumps in bath...like others said if you are getting cracked nipples get a good cream

let us know how its going

Well done for breastfeeding, you're probably at the hardest stage right now. It started getting better for me after abou 2 weeks.

I haven't had any personal experience with what you have described, but I did get blood blisters on both my nipples early on, one of which scabbed over as it healed. It was bloody painful but I found the avent nipple cream worked really well.

If in doubt, ask your MW/HV. Good luck

Sounds like what I mean, was bleeding this morning. Avent cream does seem to help, but it still damn hurts! I'm just grinning and bearing it, feeding both sides with the occasional paracetamol. It's still not great but manageable :?

I really sympathise, I nearly gave up a couple of times in the first 2 weeks because it hurt so much, I used to dread feeding times. It does get better though, and it's so worth it when it does. I love breastfeeding now! Big

One of my nipples was cracked and bleeding in the first week. The midwife said I should rub some breast milk on it after the baby fed. Apparently it has healing qualities and is better than the creams you can buy.

Hope it heals up quick for you.

How are your nipples - you know I have never asked a complete stranger that before!!!!!!!!!! Hope they are feeling better and that the feeding is settling down.

They were really bad, I remember writing that post... they're alright now. Get a bit dry and broken sometimes but the avent cream really helps, and even if they do get dry or whatever they don't actually hurt like the blood bit did before. Phew :) Feeding is going better too, I can actually walk around and do stuff with him feeding, so it's quite good really. I'm so glad I stuck at it... the time when I wrote this post I was practically on the painful verge of giving up.

Im glad I ventured in here..I really want to breastfeed but was niave to the reality of it...now I know what to expect....didnt think it would cause so many problems..eye opener thats for sure. x

If the midwife offers to hand-express for you, just say no! If I hadn't let her I wouldn't have had these problems :) But after the first couple of weeks it all gets better and it's worth persevering with.
