hi all, Im just wondering when the midwife takes your blood and tests it for abnormalities is HIV included? as I know tb is... I got my results back not long ago and the midwife said the only problem was something to do with my body cant fight german measels so try and stay away from people with it etc. in the booklet it does say they test for hiv, but the midwife didnt mention it.

Yes at my 12 week scan they took a whole lot of blood tests and one lot was a whole sexual health screen, including HIV xx

same as amanda, had my bloods taken at 12 weeks, and got my results at 16 week appointment! they do screen for HIV so if she hasnt said anything about it i wouldnt worry! my mw went through and said each thing as she ticked it off! you could always look in your notes, i just looked in ine and its on page 7 RESULTS PAGE - additional screening part is the bloods at 12/16weeks! hope that helps xxx

I had HIV and other deceases blood test at my first appointment with a midwife (at about 7 weeks pg).

If you want to check, you can try and get your surgery to give you printed results of all the tests (that's what I did).

thanks for the reply... actually she took my blood on the very first meeting with her when me and my partner were both unsure about how many weeks pregnant I was.. she said she needed to see what my blood group was and whether I had diseases like tbh... she did say on the phone however that my blood didnt show any abnormalities, and in my pregancy book it says "the following blood tests have been discussed" and shes ticked the hiv box and dated that she has taken blood... whether she tested for it or not I dont know :( im worried

Yes you do, My body can't fight German meseals either, it's just because you haven't had the injection that fights off the virus, as german measels can cause deafness, blindness and brain damage to your baby. Once the baby is born they will offer you a injection after the birth to make you immune to german meseals. HIV is tested during your blood test, it tells you on your green notes what they have tested, they tick the boxes to say if you have the all clear or not. If you do have HIV, the midwife will properly have a chat with you about it... they also test you for other STD's such as herpes, AIDs, Syphilis and other things like sickle cell :) hope this helps x

it probably means that she tested for it :) but if you are worried, why don't you call her and ask? xx

yes tommorw I will hopefully get hold of her and she will give me good news, I know none of you are docotrs but say my partner had hiv I assume I would most deffinetly have it to right? sorry I do not know much about this and this is my first baby im only 18

If you have been having sex with someone who is HIV + without a condom then you are at high risk of contracting it yourself, hope this helps hun x

Yes you would have HIV if your partner is your baby's father or you have had unprotected sex, search it on google 'HIV during pregnancy' if you have any concerns of how your pregnancy would be a little bit different... I'm not sure what would happen as I'm not HIV positive, but I assume your midwife will discuss this with you, if your partner does have HIV it's important to tell your midwife on your next meeting as some std's may mean you need different birthing method. =]

okay thanks its just there wouldnt be a needfor my partner to get tested if I had been tested and not had it as im posetive im the only person hes had intercourse with. although I have slept with other people apart from him before we were together and we've been together for 4years now

If your really worried and want further STD testing, go to your local STD clinic or family planning clinic and ask to book a appointment for STD testing, they will take a blood test and swab test and get back to you with your results. If you bring it up to the midwife, and ask her what ticking the box means she should be able to tell you, I doubt your positive because they would of most likely bought it up as it can be life threatening if not treated- also baby would have HIV too; so it would defo be a subject bought up with the midwife.... some forget certain things so just bring up the blood test, ask about your results and if the STD testing come back all clear :) try not to worry hun x

thanks again I guess I'll contact the midwife tommorow, its just when you know you have a baby inside you you'd do anything to protect him/her, sure you all understand anyway :) thanks

No problem, i know what you mean. good luck, hope all goes well x

I had my blood screening at my very first booking in appointment, and got my results at my next mw appointment. I was screened for red cell antibodies, HIV, Hepatitis B, Siphilis and a couple of others that I can't remember. They also told me my blood group. They did not however screen me for Sickle Cell and the like because I am a low risk group.

xxx

As far as I know its possible to have unprotected sex with someone with HIV without becoming infected although it is very very rare.
A woman I know had to get tested after her Husband died of AIDS related illness many years after contracting it but she was never infected the fact he had AIDS only came out after his death as he actually died from pneumonia.
I would say if any of you are in doubt you both need to get tested to be on the safe side.
x
