Got my 34 week midwife appointment tomorrow and they've told me that at this one we'll be doing my birth plan. Not really sure what to expect? Is it just a case of listing any special requirements you'd like (a pool etc?) and pain relief options? I really don't know what i want! Sometimes i like the idea of a water birth, but i don't feel massively strongly about it either way. And although i've said i don't really want an epidural, i don't want to rule it out completely because i don't know how i'll cope at the time.

I can see this being an unproductive appointment haha xx

Have a look on the nhs website, I've printed one down to fill in.

You don't have to commit yourself to anything hun, I think being flexible is the key :)

Hi Hun, as Torino said just be flexible.
Just make sure you have the things that are really important to you in there, for instance
- do you want skin to skin immediately or do you want baby cleaned up?
- do you want to bf?
- who do you want to cut the cord?
- how you feel about a csection, who holds your baby before you do ( I've said DH and relevant professionals) my friend experienced it where all her family had held her baby before she did.
- who is your birthing partner
- who do you want to act in yours and LO best interest if you can't

Don't be strict on pain relief or assisted delivery, I've just said whatever is in the best interest of me and DH

Xx

We were talking about this at the ante natal class and the mw said she had this woman in who was adamant she didn't want an epidural. She told her husband that even if she begged for one not to let them give it......so, the woman started screaming for an epidural and her husband said no to the staff, stating what his wife had told him. To cut a long story short the wife got her epidural and the husband got a black eye  :D the midwife said she'd never seen anything like it lmao

I think unless there's a religious aspect, such as Jehova's Witnesses and their refusal of blood products the staff and mother take each stage as it comes and just plays it by ear.

None of my birth plan is set in stone, I've never given birth before so I don't know what to expect nor know how I'll cope. All I know for sure is that I'm getting the OH on the gas and air as soon as possible to keep him calm lol xxxxxxxxxx

Id just do as sleepysue said as you may change ur mind about pain relief id also put if you want lo to have vitamin k jab, if you want assisted placenta delivery and who will cut cord. Just cos its in ur birth plan doesnt mean its set in stone.

I must be the only person who hasn't been asked about a birth plan, although I'm being induced I'll still take one x

I havent even started to think about it yet and im nearly 29 weeks but i know what pain relief ill be staying away from..Gas and air was one of them, no matter how much i cry and scream im still not having it! :D

Hey Bee - are you me and becky supposed to swap phone numbers some time soon hun? xx

dont worry too much, birth plans rarely go to plan- just put anything you have strong feelings about.
biggest thing is to make sure your birth partners know what you want, coz thats better than birth plan, as my sisters birth a few months ago, none of the midwives even bothered to read her birth plan when she was in labour, so it was a waste of time!

therefore if ur partners know they can voice what needs to be done if ur in too much pain, or have forgotten due to the pain. and have the paper plan as back up.

My midwife is pants, each appointment is same old same old. She hasn't even mentioned birth plan to me. I am just relying on myself to find out the info I need as when I do ask her anything she just gives an unhelpful blunt answer. Midwifes, who needs them! ha xxx

i was told i would do mine at antenatal classes (i chose not to go because of the late date they gave me) so i just worte down what i wanted, i'll ask her to look at it when i have my apt on thursday!

Ive not done one as such, just going to go with the flow as really dont know how i'm going to cope and whats going to happen, would like to avoid epidural but never say never so just going to see how things go and get hubby to keep midwives right on what i want. xx

You have to wonder sometimes if the birth plan is for the staff or the OH lol. Get it in writing what you want him to do and if he deviates you have grounds for a bigger pushing pressie lol

You ladies are so wise, it was exactly how you said lol. And they did say that nothing is set in stone and can be changed nearer the time. They asked me if i was interested in a water birth so i said i wasn't too fussed but if one's available i wouldn't mind giving it a whirl lol. I was more interested in getting the doppler on, i never get bored of hearing his little ticker!

Becciboo26, i think you're right hun. Although i haven't seen beckyjane on here for ages. Do you want to PM me with your number? xxx
