do midwifes actually read birthplans? as in mine, i put stated that i didnt mind students observing.

she brought in a student with me, and without my permission, let her deliver my baby.

i think that is really wrong. and its been playing on my mind ever since.

surely she had no right to do that?

keslo i had in my birthplan that i wanted no students in the room, but im positive the midwife who delivered my baby was a student. Seems that because they were so busy they totally disregarded my wishes and gave me a student anyway

Oh that doesn't sound good I've just written my birth plan but never mentioned my feelings on students. I don't mind them observing but certainly do not want a student to deliver my baby. Thanks girls I am going to update my birth plan this evening.

I have put on my birthplan no students at all, as loads of them poured into my room beofre whwn i had stephen and one of them was going to deliver him without my permission.TOLD HER IF SHE TOUCHED ME SHE WOULD DIE!opps sorry bout caps lock  I was in transition stage lol!

I just want a active labour and be able to move around freely without being poked and prodded.
I just want me and huibby as long as possible, and the mw to pop in every now and again

Hadn't actually thought about this so thanks for this :D

I am more than happy for students to observe, obviously not a whole flipping classroom full, as how else would they learn but not sure I would be comfortable letting one deliver my baby :?

How would I know though?

I put that I would be happy to have students, I didn't think I would initially but I remember talking to Kirlykird about it & she made a valid point that students are usually with the best mw as they are being trained, also if your mw is busy she is more likely to leave the student so that you're not on your own, the students won't do anything they're not trained to do, and without experience of delivering babies then how are they supposed to qualify?

Don't get me wrong, I see your points about not wanting a classroom full.....I think I would certainly had something new to scream about had that been the case *mental image of a line of 20 students filing into the labour room with clipboards at the ready* :rotfl: Just thought I'd mention the plus points to allowing students in.

In answer to the question though:
No Keslo, they don't appear to have either read or taken note of your birth plan......if it is bothering you then I think you should def mention it to the mw when she next visits....don't let it play on your mind

Emmylou that is a very valid point maybe I need to sitdown and think some more about it.

with my eldest I was asked half way through labour if I minded a newly qualified midwife delivering, so Lou was her first baby she had delivered herself. It was very emotional and she cried almost as much as me!

When I was back at the same maternity unit for antenatal with my second, she saw me and instantly recognised me, I had Lou with me in the buggy and she cried again (the MW that is lol) and said she always thinks about her and how she is getting on as she was her first.

I think that aslong as you are prepared and its not done without your say-so it can be very rewarding to know you are helping more midwives with thier training.

i know they have to learn, but it just isnt right to do this without asking.

it really has annoyed me so much

The mw that delivered Hope was a student and was absolutely amazing. She was so professional, it didnt really bother me all i could think about was the pain

when i was having WIllow Emma my mw asked me if i would mind if Louise a student came in and watched it was her first birth and she was pressed up against the wall by the time Willow came out  she was really nice and came to see us everyday while we were in, i never actually did a birth plan with either of mine but didn't really fancy the idea of having a student in but at the time i didn't mind, tbh if a bus load of them had come in when i was pushing her out i wouldn't of cared as long as she got out

When i had COnal i had quite a few students coming down to scbu with me to see him because he was prem and a lot of them hadn't seen one so they seen him, that didn't bother me either, i would of been annoyed if i came down and they were there without asking though

Aww thats lovely GGG, sounds lovely! Its lovely when you meet new MWs and there so enthusiatic and into theor job, makes you feel better anyways!
Hope i get one now!

the mw who delivered my nephew was so lovely and did a brilliant job.

Ive put in my birthplan that I dont mind 1 student being present but I want to be able to get to know them, not just shipped in purely to observe the delivery.

What sort of things can you specify on a birth plan? Students, pain relief.. is there anything else you can mention..? Not done mine yet :?
