When Dexter was born, the paediatric nurse thought he had a bruise under his nose. A week or so after being born it became obvious it is a birt mark. It is bright red in colour.

My cousin who is just three was born with one on her neck and it has now basically gone. And a child I know had one on her arm. She has recently turned 4 and hers is nearly gone.

Dexter is beautiful with or without a birth mark....but due to kids at school when he is older, I hope it fades.

Has anyone else had any experience with birth marks?

My son has a little stalk bite on the side of his belly its basically like a bunch of purpleish red dots, a bit like a hicky. As he is so pale it has always looked quite prominant and I used to get so many comments from HV about the 'burise on his tummy' :wall: It has changed (sort of streached and become less visable as the dots have moved apart) as he has got older but I dont think it will ever disappear. TBH its part of him and I love it.

Time will tell if Dexters goes but I wouldnt be overly conscerned, alot of babies have them and they usually fade really quickly.

here are a couple of links I found

Hope they help

My son has a birth mark on the back of his leg, it is brown in colour like a patch of pigment. I asked doc about it not long after he was born, and he said he will probably always have it. There are different kinds of birth marks and apparently the red ones usually fade away to nothing, whereas if they look more brown, it is likely to be where there is a patch of extra pigment in the skin so these tend to stay as they are part of the skin make up. I have to say though, it looked huge when he was a baby, but now he is 3 it is pretty tiny on his leg. I wouldnt be too concerned hun, it will probably fade, but obviously ask your doc for better advice if it worries you x

If it is bright red it could be a strawberry mark which usually keep growing for the 1st year or so then start to disappear by about the age of 3.

Thank you for your replies ladies :)

It has been very helpful and I appreciate it

Hey hun, Tally has 2 of these, one on the very back of her head which will be covered with hair and the other at the bottom of her back where everyone gets a tattoo!

I swear they're already fading!! I'm sure Dexters will too, you probably spend hours staring at him taking in every little bit of him so you will notice these things, i have some pigment on my face (not sure of its name lol) and no-one ever notices it except me lol

Hi Fuffins

If it is a strawberry mark, I still have mine!

My Mum was very concerned when I was a baby. It's on my back and was apparently bright red and growing! The doctors said it was harmless and would go by about the age of 5.

I do still have it, but it is very faint now, like the colour of pinky scar tissue! I forget it's even there (probably partly because it's behind me  ) but it doesn't bother me at all anyway, quite proud of my little mark proving that I'm not quite 5 years old yet! :D

The top of one of Evie's fingers is purpley red- its like she dipped her finger in paint!

I had a strawberry mark by my nose when i was younger- it was realy noticeale but now there is NOTHING there. I am popping over my mum's tonight so I'll try and dig out some photos for you

Hey babe My beautifull little girl was born with a facial birthmark. I was told by my Gp that these things usually go but by 6 months it hadn't faded at all so i have been refered to a specialist at Gt Ormand St where they have a birthmark unit. It turns out that the birthmark is a light portwine stain and will never go. In January we are going back to the hospital for a laser test and then will be hopefully starting laser treatment to fade the birthmark. Jessys birthmark is pinky red in colour and is on the left side of her face. It isn't raised and when I put any pressure with my fingers on it it fades. I was intially very upset about the birthmark when she was born but now I don't even see it when I look at her. I too am worried about how she will get treated at school as the birthmark covers quite a large area but I am hoping the lasers will help. I think I will just have to not make a big issue about it and when she is old enough to ask and notice that she looks different I don't no yet how I will deal with it. To me and others that love her we don't even notice it and we love Jessy anyway and we can see past it. To me she is the most beautifull thing in the world with or without a birthmark! If you would like to chat about it more PM if you like  xxxxxxxx

My neice and my sister were oth born with strawberry birth marks. They got bigger and more raised initially but disappeared when they were quite young - about 2 form memory. I think the majority are like this. Charlotte has a light birth mark on her chest which hasn't changed since she was born, but I'm not too worried about it yet.

Charlie has a Strawberry on her back, its about the size of a 50p, it grew rapidly in the 1st year, it has stopped now.

If it is bright red it could be a strawberry mark which usually keep growing for the 1st year or so then start to disappear by about the age of 3.

We see the specialist in plastics dept and he told us that it would start to shrink at about the age of 7.

Charlie is very aware of it , and looks at it in the mirror talking to it etc!!

My daughter kyla was born with 2 birth marks one on top of her eyelid, which is pink, the doc told me this was a pressure mark from the birth and will prob always have it although it fades and comes out more when shes upset and crying. The other one she has on her back, which looks like a little bruise, shes had that since birth too, shes 16 months now and it has faded, whether is because her skin has streched as shes growing. Speak to your gp if worried about it.
