I want to start but only have K Swiss trainers which I really dont think are suitable?

Hi Luv,

Nah, they won't give you proper support. You should try M and M sports online.

Look for New Blanace, Saucony, Asics or Nike.

You need to also find out if your foot rolls out or in the way. It's called your foots pronation. So you either over-pronate, under-pronate or are neutral!

Try looking here for advice http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/news/article.asp?UAN=481

It does all seem a bit daunting, but honestly, a good shoe can be the difference between constant injury or easy running!!

they need to give you proper support, especailly around the ankle. also neeed to be cushioned around ball of the foot.

laces need to go right around the side at the top as that stops yuor foot slipping inside.

you may find you need to buy a half size bigger or even a whole size bigger as the toes impact on the front of the shoe.

my prefferd brands are saucony and assics. and i have just bought a piar of addidas which i am road testing at the moment.

i would recommend buying from a shop that sells lots of different types of shoes as tennis shoes, aerobic shoes, gym shoes are different from running/jogging shoes so you need to be in a shop that sells all types so you can see what is around - if you go to a shop that just has say gym shoes they may push you in to buying them and then you wont have the right support (this happened to my freing she enede up with tennis shoes and then had shin splints as a result)

just to add

lots of good running shops now have treadmills in them and they can asses you run and determine if you pronate and so recommend the right shoe,

i did the great north run last year, actually am doing it again this year. neway, i got a pair of Asics trainers, they are ££££ but sooooooooo worth it. Go to a proper shop that has trained assistants. I got my feet scanned, n everything to see what support i needed. I think my trainers where £180 but my god im glad i got them, didnt get one blister last yr :D

??????
How would you know the difference???

(I never realised I could become out of date about running!!)

if when you run you foot lands squarely and balanced you are neutral, if your foot lands sort of with the big toe and arch landing inwards yuo under pronate and if your foot lands more with the little toe and and the outside of the foot you over pronate.
a scan or visual analysis by a trained shop assistant will be able to tell you.
also look at your current shoes, not just trainers all shoes, do they weare down in the same place first this could be a sign of pronation.

i am quite heavy in my running shoes and so need a stronger shoe such as saucony, but assics are slightly lighter.

if you do pronate and dont wear the right shoes it can lead to knee problems and stress down your IT band and then lost of physio!!

so best advice go to a proper sports shop or better still a running shop and ask to be served by someone who is a runner - dont get the staurday boy!!

a good shop for analysis is the london marathon store in Convent garden, they will do stride analysis, gait analysis and posture etc.

 I didnt realise the importance of correct training shoes.

I also dont know how I should start jogging i.e. round my big block 1st? Then increase it???? Any advice girls would be great

yeah slow short distance to satrt with, around the block is good because you know where the end is!!

and build it up slowly just by increasing your goal every week, as you wnat to keep pushing yourself and not get to the point where you do the same jog 3 times a week as it will be boring and you will do it too comfortably and so not gain anything.

when i started training i couldnt even run half a mile 6 months later i ran the london marathon and have done 3 more marathons since!! (will do another this October if i am not pregnent by then!)

Cor, well done u. Somehow I cant see me do a marathon!!!!

Another quick question, how would I know if a sports shop would analyse my feet?

ask them if they can do a gait or stride analysis on a running machine it will be all set up with a camara to record your running style, you will probably jog for 20 secs with no shoes on and then for 20 secs with your current running shoes and they will compare the 2. (or thats how mine was done)
