It depends on the temp of your room, the Mothercare catalogue has a guide to room temp and layers:
Between 16-18 degrees a sheet and 2 blankets
Between 18-20 degrees a sheet and a blanket
Above 22 degrees just a sheet
A folded blanket counts as 2 blankets, also check your baby's temp by putting a finger down the front of their vest. My LO was always a warm baby and didn't need as many layers as recommended.
You could also get a newborn sleeping bag if you think that makes things easier (that is what we did!)

2/3 Fitted sheets
3/4 (Small - Moses/Crib) Cellular Blankets or larger ones if using a cot
2/3 Fleece Blankets
4 Towels or sheets to use as sicky strips as i call it!
I used to place a towel/sheet across the sheet, where babies head would be, if LO was sick then it was easier to change this than the whole bedding.
I folded in half the small crib blanket, and used to place 2 of these folded on top of Calum and found it easier to remove a blanket if needed rather than complety taken blanket off and replace with a smaller one. All LO's are different with how warm they want to be and to be honest Calum didnt think much to the guidelines on blankets!

i have a fitted sheet on the bottom with a terry nappy laid across where head goes for sick and dribble splater, then i have a sheet folded down with a cellular blanket and 2 thin fleece blankets over the top so i can add or remove layers as needed

How do you stop the baby kicking all the sheets off or over his face or anything? would they be tucked under the baby or under the mattress how does it work? sorry another stupid question off me

I was worried about this before bubs came and how much bedding to use but you just use your instincts once they are home. We swaddle the wee man in a handmade shawl or cellular blanket, then put a blanket over him. Our bedroom's only been 17-18 degrees the last few nights but wee man is always pretty toasty. Sometimes take the blanket off as he seems to be a hot little chap!
