My manager has just called me to ask my intentions for returning to work. Despite not being due back until 28th October the person that took over me was only given a 6 month contract so they are basically just making sure I still want the full year.

However I have been asked to put in writing (email) my intentions - ie dates and stuff.

I have a 3 month notice period BUT surely 5 months into maternity leave is too early to ask me to make this decision?

I am going to send an email saying

"My intentions at present are blah, blah, blah but I will confirm this in due course"

Will that be OK?

I am so upset that I am having to think about this already. With each day I feel more and more anxious about the idea of leaving my baby.

Hopefully I win the Euromillions later

I would, and don't stress about it. You have ample time to decide what you want to do, don't let them pile on the stress for their own convenience! xx

I didn't think you had to let them know until closer to your return date. For me I said I think a year but I have to give 8/52 notice to bring sooner. Check your contract? Don't let them make you feel uncomfortable x

Mmm... I don't think this is right at all? I'm pretty sure that your employer assumes your taking a year off? They should have sent you a letter confirming the date your maternity leave started? The date your maternity pay finishes? And the date your due back to work? It's up to you to inform them when your going back to work. But you can actually just turn up the day you want to return xxx

I think it's against the law to ask you when you are returning, they are meant to assume you are taking the year off. I had to write with 8 weeks notice of my intention to return to work date. Xx

Did you have a letter confirming your maternity dates etc before you finished?

If so I'd just refer to that

If you didn't I'd just say what your intentions are... Just a simple one liner xx

I actually want to take a months worth of holiday so I have emailed and said I plan to take the full year but am formally requesting 20 days holiday to add on at the end.

I cc'd in HR so they are aware my manager rang me and asked me to provide this info and I made sure I didn't say anything concrete - there were a lot of "my current intentions are" and "I will formalise in due course according to the conditions set out in my contract" LOL!

So basically HR know my silly manager has been calling me asking me to confirm dates when she shouldn't have.

Hi hun at my work we keep in touch regularly with mat leave ladies you even have days where you can come in and just sorta see everyone. Depends on your contract really

Oh is a hr officer and says it's normal to keep contact but it isn't necessity quiz you on your intentions and all that. Some companies do it from more of a health and wellbeing angle... Your boss sounds like she's just being nosey and probably missing your work as I know you've been there years haven't you.

Meh tell her to do one till at least August!!!

Hi love,

Being a hr officer myself, they shouldn't be asking you this on your leave. You would have told them before you left your intention to return to work date and then they should assume this will be the date unless you tell them otherwise. If you decide to change that date you'll need to give 8 weeks notice only. however if there are any business changes that will affect your any aspect of your return to work or your job role, then they can ask you to confirm and they'll have a valid reason.

You do have keep in touch days where you can work for up to 10 days and then you can obv talk to your boss about your return date etc

Baby bushie said it much better than my ramble lol!

I had the same thing with both pregnancies, first one I was asked after 3 months (only got 6 months leave) second baby I was asked at 5 months (11 month leave)

I found it actually helped, if your definately going back its good to get it into your head, get used to the idea rather than totally worrying a week before your due back.
