Hi ladies... I have been ordering some baby essentials such as nappies, baby cream, cotton wool and was thinking what kind of toilettries does smal baby needs? Shampoo? Baby oil? Maybe someone has an idea... Thank you!

Hey hun
I used johnsons baby shampoo and going forward a bedtime bath wash couple of little drips in there bath
And also used bedtime bath body wash
It suited my little one really well and will try it again with this baby

When there first born you only need warm water and cotton wool
You can use soap if you like / wish
Most advise not to use too many wash products when there first born and to let there skin breath and adapt :)
Hope that helps xx

Also had baby oil in stock but I honestly never used it x

Thanks Laura. From when would you start using the toilettries? After couple of weeks?

Yeah hun, was a little different for us as DS was in hospital at 4 days old for 5 days
So I would say about 2 weeks we started introducing a baby wash and bath
And keep the same one for first couple of uses incase any skin irritation appears then you know if it's ok or not to use it :) xx

Perfect :) need to find some small bottles to buy, in case it doesn't work out...

They have a fair few baby events on asda and tesco at the moment
Ideal time to buy hun
Or even look at one of the johnsons boxes toiletries sets on link below
Had one with DS was fab and still use it now for bath toys lol
Of course depends which brand you want hun :) xx

You really don't need a lot of toiletries. We got loads of stuff bought for us that either lasted ages or we didn't use. I've honestly never used baby oil or talc on my LO. Some bubble bath and shampoo is enough. When first born we used olive oil on our son's skin, I'd definitely recommend picking up a little bottle of this from boots.

All you need are what you get in the Bounty packs to be honest, and even then, all of mine are still sat 3/4 full after almost a year! I wouldn't spend the money. Get your Emma's diary vouchers and your bounty packs and that will be more than enough to be prepared, as you need almost nothing in the first month anyhow :) xxx

I used tescos range of bedtime stuff...

Bubble bath
Body wash
Talc
Lotion

For the first couple weeks I bathed DS every couple-three days in just plain water.
Then I started dribbling a tiny spot of bubble bath in every other bath, and using baby body wash in between (again just a teeny drop).

After about a month, I bathed him every night as part of his bedtime routine, but still only used one or other bubbles or wash.

I'd use the bedtime lotion every night for baby massage after his bath.
Put talc in his nappy (only used it on the "going to bed" nappy), then put him to bed.

Once or twice a week I'd wash his hair with Dentinox Cradle Cap shampoo, which I cannot recommend highly enough. Xx

Louise, I got my packs, but none of them had anything useful really, apart from baby wipes and sudocream...

I wouldnt buy any toiletries until LO arrives. We got bought loads of Johnsons stuff and it's never been used. Our LO had sensitive skin and baby eczema when she was born so for the first few months all we used was water. Now we only use simple baby shampoo and simple baby bath.

How odd! Have you had all of them? Two of mine came with full Johnsons baby packs? Each included: A full pack of baby wipes, a bottle of baby oil, a bottle of baby bath gel, a tube of nappy cream and I think some moisturiser? If I recall these were the last packs in the series of vouchers (so the third or fourth vouchers). Hope they've not stopped! x

We had an antenatal class today and it was focussed on bathing and changing. They recommended using only cotton wool and water in the first 6weeks and after that talc and Vaseline seemed to be big no no's. They weren't keen on baby wipes either unless you're out and about!

I'm not bothering getting anything until baby is here and I know what they need / how sensitive their skin is x

Belfa, I still to this day do not actually know what the point of talc is?! It's meant to be bad for babies cos it can get into their airways, causing breathing problems etc.

I'd also say anyone who lasts to 6 weeks without using baby wipes is a miracle worker ;) using cotton wool and water is a nightmare; I had every intention, but as soon as the meconium stopped and the breastmilk poo started flowing out every colour of the rainbow (oh God I'm having a flashback.......) I couldn't get on those baby wipes fast enough! :)

One thing to add is when getting your cotton wool for the hospital bag to take into the hospital for nappy changes, get the circular pads (the eye make up remover ones) not the balls. Balls absorb the water and screw up into mush, the pads at least can stay flat and useable!
