My OH has emailed me an ebay link for a video baby monitor. Its like £80. Its a lot more than I was thinking we'd spend on a monitor and was just wondering if anyone had one and has opinions. Waste of money, or reassuring buy?

i was thinking the same as i want to the the angle care one with the sensor mat. i think its a reasurring buy! ive had a few patients come in work and their babys died of cot death so this has made me make me mind up and buy it. sorry 2 b morbid.
i'm just going to shop round and wait for it to come on offer. ive seen it in mothercare for £80 but seen it on the net for £65 the cheapest so far.
just do your homework i'm i'm sure u'll get it cheaper.

thanks mel. Yeah I really want to spend on one of those sensor mats, i think that would reassure me more than video link! Although the video would be useful in my parents house cos its over 3 floors and my rooms at the top, if I heard him cry I'd pop upstairs at home but at my parents Id want to just check a video before scaling mount staircases!

The sensor mats are really good and I would recommend them, I never had the video thing but it does sound good too :D

My daughter is now 2 and when she was first born we had both a video and sound monitor(the video was a cheapie off ebay and sound quality was crap) and I thought the video was worn it's weight in gold, it was so reassuring to watch her when she made the slightest noise rather than go up and run the risk of waking her up by going into the room, especially when she wasn't well. She's now 2 and I have to say we still use it to make sure she's OK and has her covers on her.

I would say the ebay cheapie broke within about 9 months and I bought another one (a cheapie that is).

Thanks guys. Sounds like a resounding 'go for it' then!! I'll do a bit of googling today to try and find a good one, no point having to buy another in a few months is there! When Ive been buying white goods for the house I found that dixons online was always cheaper than anywhere else so I think Ill start there :)

One of my OH's friends said that the video ones were a waste of money - not EXACTLY sure why though, I kinda like the idea.

My friend recommended to us that when we buy a monitor, to spend a decent amount - she said most £30 ones buzz in the background so they drive you up the wall! lol!

I think that if my baby monitor had video when DD was born i would have drove myself crazy. Its bad enough hearing every little movement without checking the screen as well every two seconds. I think normal monitors are fine and the video ones are a bit of a waste of money.

I only spent £5 on mine from ebay and they are stiil working after nearly 4 years! The buzzing in the background is caused by electrical interference so dont put them too near lamps, tvs, stereos, u get the idea.

I got a tommee tippee motion and sound sensor from asda it does everything the expensive ones do and it was only £40 in the baby and toddler event x

we bought the tixylix ones from lloyds pharmacy for a tenner... theyre fab and have lasted 3 1/2years... although we've co-slept through the night and just used them for daytime naps (with rhys) but have used them for ffion for the past 2 years through the night too

I will be getting the Angelcare sensor pad one, had one with my girls and they are fab and well worth the money.

i got tommee tippee sensor mat monitor which is now in asda baby event for 50 quid!! its amazing and works really well but i will be honest i only tried it ive never actually used it. basic monitors would do me . i couldnt have the video ones as i think they would make u paranoid and how do you wean urself off them... not for me im afraid... xx
