Thought I had better do my birth story as its been over 4 weeks!

Emily's due date was 14th July. Had consultant appointment on 16th. Had had more reduced movement over that 24hrs so mentioned it at the appointment. As it was my third episode of reduced movement and I was passed my due date I was booked in to start induction on Thursday 18th July. Also had a sweep which done nothing!! Lol

Had to be at the hospital for 8am on the Thursday. My mum(who's a midwife) met me and hubby outside the entrance to the hospital and walked up to the ward with us as she was working that day anyway.

Midwife examined me and I was no where near ready. She was also quite miffed as to how the midwife a few days before had performed a sweep!

Anyway she started to try and insert the Propess. That was quite sore and as I was squirming about due to the pain I was given gas and air! Wonderful stuff! Eventually propess was in and I was told that I would be checked in 24hrs and waters would either be broken or I would be given the gel.

Was sent up to ward and hubby stayed all day but had to go home at 9pm.

Propess done nothing at all!! It came out on the Friday morning. Labour ward was ridiculously busy so could not go down to get checked and had to wait until the Saturday.

Eventually was given a bed on labour ward at 12pm on the Saturday. Was checked and my cervix was still no where near ready. Was given the gel and was asked to go for a walk and be a mobile as possible and would be checked again in 6hrs. Had to have a second lot of gel as the first lot done nothing!

Started to get wee niggles with the second lot of gel. Was checked at midnight and waters could not be broken but cervix was more favourable! I was knackered by this point so was given a shot of diamorphine to help me get some sleep. Luckily hubby also got to stay over on the reclining chair next to me!

Sunday morning I was determined my waters would be broken! Midwife came in and up she went to try and break them. It took her a wee while but she managed to break my waters and I was just 2cms and no more!

By this time my mum had come down to the hospital as well as she was my second birthing partner. Hubby was on the phone to his mum telling her what was happening so my mum was helping me get my knickers back on and clean me up. She put a maternity mat on the floor and good job as I stood up there was a massive gush of fluid and I lost my plug at the same time. I actually heard my plug hit the floor and hubby seen it fall out!

Started to get pains right away so was using the gas and air! Was sick a few times as well. Was told that my contractions were not lasting long enough and I had an hr to see how it went or I was getting put on the drip.

Ended up on the drip about 1230. Managed until 3 pm on gas and air and one shot of diamorphine but pain was too much so asked for an epidural. Was only 4cm at this point. The anethsitist was in theatre and I eventually got my epidural at 1745. Was so hard to stay still as was contacting a fair bit when she was trying to put the needle in.

Once the epi was in I felt so much better!! Even managed a wee nap! My dad was also at the hospital with food for my mum and hubby. Dad was allowed in quickly to see me then went back out to the waiting room.

Was checked again at 1930 and was fully dialated! Was told I would be given an hr then had to start pushing.

2045 started pushing. It was so strange watching my contractions on the monitor and not really feeling them! Was pushing for an hr and nothing was happening (apart from pooing myself!) Registrar came in and I was told that forceps would be required. Now unbeknown to me this Dr has a very bad reputation with forceps so my mum stepped in at this point. She asked for the on call consultant to be called in for his opinion! So in he came from home and he said that I would be going to theatre for forceps and if that didn't work would then be a section. I remember my mum asking him to do the procedures which he said he was happy to do!

Hubby was given his blue scrubs to wear and my drugs were topped up and we were away to theatre. Mum stayed in the waiting area with dad.

In theatre consultant said I would have 3 contractions with forceps to try and get her out. He had turn her first as she was facing my right hip. Was told by the midwife when to push but the only thing I managed to push out was more poo!!!

Consultant pushed E back up and was then given a section. My baby was born at 2345 on 21st July weighing 8lb 6. Hearing her cry for the first time was amazing. Hubby told me that we had a daughter(we were team yellow) which was a magical moment that I will never forget. As I was lying totally flat and shaking/shivering due to the meds and everything that happened, E was handed to hubby while I was sewn up. At this point I got myself so distressed as I could feel slightly more than I think I should have been able to feel. Wasn't painful as such but boarding between discomfort and pain. Anyway I heard someone asking for general anaesthetic drugs!! I begged not to be knocked out and just gritted my teeth until they were done!

When I was sewn up I was given E for the first time and she was put down my hospital gown. Was wheeled out of theatre and mum and dad were in the corridor waiting. Introduced them to their new granddaughter!

Was taken to the observation ward. Hubby got to stay for another hour then he was sent home. I just lay and could not stop staring at my little girl!

I tried to breast feed but I had absolutely nothing to give her so had to FF.

E had a bit jaundice so had to have 24 hrs of light therapy.

I lost quite a lot of blood so had to have a transfusion the next day.

Was told as well that if I have another then I can have an elective section next time which is what I'm going to do!

I think I went through quite a lot but I would do it all again in a heartbeat for my baby!
