How the last week and a bit have flown by, it seems to have taken me ages to get around to writing this birth story! :) sorry, it is a bit of a long one!

I was due on Friday 25th April, this day came and went without a sign with the exception of a couple of period like cramps late in the evening and I was left waiting.
On the Wednesday at 4am I started getting cramps and tightenings but only once an hour, this carried on all day, Thursday these increased to about once every 4-8 mins all day and I started losing my plug in the afternoon and I thought 'here we go!'. I had a hot bath in the evening (heaven!) and at about 11pm they dropped back to once an hour :eh: throughout the night I began to have some bleeding that didn't seem to be my plug so at 5am we were off to the hospital to get checked over 'bring your bags just in case' they said, so off we trot.
I was seen straight away and they midwife was concerned as she also said it didn't seem to be my plug, a senior midwife gave me the all clear and home we went.
Friday 2nd May I was having awful period like cramps roughly every 5 - 10 mins and a terrible constant back pain but no tightenings. I was due to have a sweep but was so shattered after the night I had had, the midwife agreed to call me in the morning to arrange to have a sweep then. She also suggested a TENS machine for the back pain. My mum was an absolute star and hired me a TENS machine which was great, I would definitely recommend them! and I had this on all day :) It was a very painful and tiring day, I was sick 4 times with the pain and couldn't stomach any food, I could barely bring myself to drink anything! I was beginning to wonder how on earth I was going to be able to get through giving birth!

I cimbed into bed at around midnight to try and get some rest but was up after 5 mins with cramp and needing a wee! I got up and said to OH that the pressure down below was getting unbearable. I sat on the loo and 'whoosh!', my waters broke! I phoned the hospital and explained everything, they said to come in so they could check me over and send me home again, they didn't even mention about taking my bags but thank god I did!

We got to the hospital at around 12.35am and spent the first hour going over my birthing notes, they timed my cramps and comfirmed that they were contractions even though the tightening had stopped. At 1.40am they said they were happy for me to go home for a while if I was happy until things got moving a bit more as contractions were not close enough for them to tell me to come in. I agreed to go home and as soon as the words left my mouth I had a stronger and longer contraction and told them that I might change my mind! lol they agreed it might be a good idea and said they would leave us to it and come and check on me in an hour.
After 10 mins the contractions were lasting longer than the gap inbetween them and I told OH to buzz the midwife and student midwife that were seeing me. He did this several times but no one came, at 2.05am I told him to leave me and go and get them as I was feeling like I was going to need to push soon and wanted them with me NOW!. It turns out that their pager wasn't working so they hadn't realised I was buzzing them!
They got someone to run the pool as I wanted a water birth and sent OH to get the bags from the car, I looked to the midwife and said that I won't have time for the pool; she was very reassuring and said of course you will, they are filling it now.
By the time OH got back from the car baby's head was beginning to crown and a message went out to forget the pool there was no time (I knew it!).
After 3 days of slow labour, Baby Ellis decided that she was coming now and that was that and she arrived at 2.50am after 1hr 5 mins of 'active labour'. I went through virtually the whole thing on a TENS machine with a little G & A at the last minute but then still had to have a spinal block after as her speedy arrival meant that I needed surgery to repair a 3rd degree tear :( Oh, and their buzzer stared going off after she was born before the placenta was delivered! what timing! lol

I had to stay in overnight as there was nobody available to discharge me  so we came home on the Sunday. We are now settled at home, surprisingly well seeing as we have been on our own most of the time and looking forward to the next 2 weeks when my OH will be off work :)
