Hi

LO has his 2 month vaccines on Wednesday and hasn't pooped since. Before that he went every day as he's on comfort milk so it keeps him regular hence I'm surprised he hasn't been.

There was a skid mark in his nappy today so he must have tried to go and not succeeded.

Going to try some water tonight and a massage to get things moving but I just wondered if this was common.

Thanks

I havent' had experience with constipation after vaccines, but I'm a dietician and didn't want to read and run. Bowel movements are for some people very easily disturbed by stress or illness or changes and a vaccine definitely qualifies as such a factor. The bacteria population in the baby's large intestine can get disturbed by the boost of the immune system and change in numbers and quality. This affects the bowel movements. Having said that, it might also be random... My baby would go from pooping 5 times a day to twice in a week in a matter of days at that age.

However, since it's been several days, I'd contact someone just to be on the safe side. When we had the same issue (though it wasn't vaccines, but travelling) and I called the nurse after 72 hours of no poop, they told me that if the baby passes gas, I could wait a couple more days and see without getting worried. If they don't pass gas either, apparently they need to be checked.

Thanks very much for that information, very helpful and makes sense to me. He's taken 1oz of water and had a good massage and exercises after his bath so if that doesn't get things moving I guess I should call NHS 24?x

Probably from the rota virus... I'd just give cooled boiled water 3oz max.

Was just going to ask if he'd had the rotovirus vaccine. Could be down to that.

X

Yes he had rotovirus and I'm pleased to say that the water did the trick! Two dirty nappies at midnight and another today, phew!! I'm going to mention it at the next round as they should warn you really x

We were warned and we were also told that unless it has been more than 3-4 days without a poopy nappy then NHS won't really take much notice other than advising cool boiled water and (the one that works for me) massaging a bit of cream or Vaseline around his bottom and his anus (gross I know but my god it works!) and my HV said a pinch of brown sugar and water but I haven't tried that as the cream thing worked a treat and has done every time he has been for a poop in over 24hrs! :-) x
